BYOD @ Point View School
Anthony Wright - March 26, 2024
What is BYOD?
BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. This is where students bring their own device to school to support their learning.
Beginning in 2025 Point View School is expanding our BYOD programme. We are asking all families of students in Years 5 and 6 to seriously consider students bringing their own device to school daily.
Why BYOD?
At Point View School we are focussed on equipping our students to become responsible citizens in an ever changing world. We want them to be able to collect, synthesise and analyse information and then work collaboratively with others to apply that knowledge. Students need to be lifelong learners who can adapt and respond to changes in the world. Bring Your Own Device allows students to have one-to-one time on a device that is set up to support their learning. This has many benefits, including:
• enabling students to take increasing responsibility and ownership for their own learning
• develops critical thinking skills, as students reflect on their learning needs and opportunities when selecting the right tool for them
• teaches students how to discern what tool will best help with their learning
• prepares students for a future of lifelong learning with a continual increase in technology awareness and digital citizenship
Devices at school are used to support learning across the curriculum including literacy and mathematics programmes, the inquiry learning process and the Digital Technologies curriculum. The devices also allow for catering for individualised learning needs.
Does my student have to bring their own device?
Students who do not bring a device will have shared access to school devices.
Recommended Devices
Chromebook (from $450) - not suitable for Botany College
MacBook (from $1500)
iPad (from $600) - not suitable for Somerville Intermediate
Windows laptop
Any device that has a large enough screen (11’’ or bigger) and can access Google Drive, Docs etc will work.
Requirements
Wireless
Battery Life: Should last 5-6 hours to be able to get through a school day without recharging.
RAM: For Chromebook this should be 4GB. For other devices it should be 8GB or more; more is better and will increase the useful life of the device.
Weight: Should be light enough for your child to carry to and from school.
Insurance: While we take care to protect student property, we cannot accept responsibility for devices lost or stolen, so make sure it is covered for these possibilities. We recommend you check that your household contents insurance policy covers accidental damage to a student device at school.
