Wellington City Libraries Summer Reading Challenge

This summer many of our children have taken part in the Wellington City Libraries Summer Reading Challenge. Whether our school won a prize for participation or not, the end result is that many children were reading over the holidays which is awesome!

Being role models for reading is a really important part of adults' roles in encouraging children to read for pleasure, to see that we value reading as a valid and pleasurable way to pass an hour or so. The staff took part in a national reading challenge run by Read NZ which all schools were invited to join. In a leaderboard dominated by big colleges, we were unlikely to be on the podium, however as a primary school we represented ourselves very well, being the highest placed primary school and 16th overall out of 105 entries. Many of us logged our reading and were able to find suggestions from each other for our next book. You can have a look here at our Top 10, maybe you will find something that interests you!
Here is a video we made of staff being caught reading during the summer which we showed at our welcome back hui.https://vimeo.com/907604319

On a similar theme, here is an interesting Spinoff interview with Kieran Read about his favourite books and how they have influenced him. Another great reading role model!https://thespinoff.co.nz/books/17-01-2024/i-love-to-think-of-myself-as-a-jack-reacher-what-kieran-read-reads
