Our Enviro Trip
By Madi and Hazel

On Thursday 7th, March Seatoun school’s enviro leaders attended a meet - up with environmental leaders from different schools, as well as some enviro experts. It was held in the Berhampore Island Bay community orchard, a tranquil garden near Wakefield Park. We went there to collaborate with enviro leaders from different schools in order to find new ways of making our school greener, while also sharing what we know. This was a really exciting opportunity for us and we partook in various activities.

While at the meet up we made smoothies on a special stationary bike that has one of its wheels hooked up to a mechanism that can spin the blades inside of a smoothie container. That worked super well and we all had delicious smoothies. We also did some decorating of the space around the orchard to learn about how we can reuse decorations for different events (i.e. the disco.) We then went to a very interesting lesson on good composting, where we learned about some ways we can improve our own composting at school. Also at the event there were some kindy kids from Capital Kids, and together we learned about the origins of resources like aluminium, glass, plastic, refined iron, etc. At the end of our time at the orchard, we talked to some people from Wellington City Council about sustainable event planning.

One of the reasons we attended this meeting was so that we could find ways of making our upcoming disco more sustainable. This is because our discos are generally not very sustainable; we often use things like chippie packets and juice boxes, which create unnecessary litter. We used this opportunity to find ways to amend this, and be able to have alternative ways to have food and decorations at our disco that are easier on the planet. We also learned some very interesting things about improving our composting at school. All in all this was a great experience and we will put this new information to good use around our kura.
