Newsletter Week 8/9, Term 1, 2023

Kia ora e te whānau,

We are fast approaching the end of the term - and it has been a full one!

A reminder that school will resume for Term 2 on WEDNESDAY, 26 APRIL.

As we mentioned earlier in the year, next term we will be sending home an attendance snapshot to all families to keep you in the loop of the attendance situation for your children.

School attendance has been talked about a lot recently in the media. You may have seen some of the advertising on television as part of the Every Day Matters campaign from the Ministry of Education.

We know that attendance is critical to student success, both academically and socially. When students are absent from school, they miss out on valuable instruction, interaction with their peers, and opportunities for learning and growth. Even just a few absences can add up and impact a student's progress.

Missing just one day of school per week adds up to nearly 40 days of school missed over the course of a school year. This can translate into missed opportunities to learn new material, ask questions, participate in discussions, and engage in hands-on activities. It can also make it difficult for students to keep up with their classmates and feel confident in their abilities. Regular attendance is essential for building good study habits, developing strong relationships with teachers and peers, and preparing for a successful future.

At Silverdale, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages all students to attend every day. We also understand that there may be extenuating circumstances that prevent a student from attending, and we are here to support families and work together to find solutions. If you would like to talk to someone about your particular circumstance - please feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks for partnering with us in your child's success by ensuring they attend school regularly and arrive on time. If your child must be absent, please notify the school as soon as possible.

I also would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a happy Easter and term break period. Looking forward to seeing you all back on the first day of Term 2!

Classroom Item - Room 9

by Priscilla Thatcher

In the Middle School, we have been learning about how living things share the resources in their environment to survive and thrive. In Room 9, we have spent time learning about insects and bugs, the habitats they live in and how they share the resources in their environment. We created this mural as part of our learning to help us understand what each insect needed and who (or what) they had to share their food with.

Classroom Item - Room 14

by Priscilla Thatcher

Throughout Term 1 Room 14 has been exploring the different communities that we belong to and how we can make a positive difference. This started with setting up our classroom expectations, followed by some statistical research to help with the School Disco. One example was using mathematical thinking skills to gather data on favourite kai for the school Disco. Our students collected the data of tally graphs then created bar graphs to clearly display their data. From this they were able to advise the PTG that dumplings would be a great food option. These were a success on the night selling out.

'Yummy Apples' Stickers

by Priscilla Thatcher

Our orchards like many other growers in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, have been badly affected by the recent cyclone. Yummy are fortunate to have orchards spread widely across the Bay, which has meant some of our orchards have been completely devastated but some have survived. It has been a tricky time for sure, but we are managing to pick the majority of our crop this season, so that’s some good news and will push on with the Yummy School Sticker Promo again this year . Even in these tough times, it’s great to be part of a community and give back to schools and kids, so thanks for being part of this promotion 26 years on! You can start collecting anytime now (if you haven’t already started), and some more good news – we will be switching over to compostable stickers in the next few month.
