Congratulations to our 2021 Year 13 Leaders!!!

Nau mai haere mai and welcome to our first newsletter/pānui for 2021. There is quite a story behind the name of our newsletter which will be explained further on in this edition.

In 2021 Tauranga Girls’ College sees the start of a new era. A change in the house structure was seen as the ideal opportunity to revisit our current house names, and decide who or what now inspires our young wahine. All students and staff were encouraged to bring forth their ideas and the whole kura voted.

Students, staff, iwi and whānau from Tauranga Girls’ College have brought to life the school’s new houses, named after trail-blazing New Zealand women, through a unique community collaboration.

The 2020 Scholarship results are out and we are pleased to announce the success of nine of our students.

We offer a range of extra-curricular Dance opportunities alongside our curriculum options. There is a culture of student leadership and collaboration in Dance. Senior students act as mentors to the younger students and life-long friendships are forged. Students of any year level and ability are encouraged to get involved!

The Tauranga Girls’ College Music Department has a tradition of excellence in both curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Samantha Paki has joined the Careers team. Her role is to co-ordinate and manage placement of students in work experience, Gateway programs, set learning goals and co-ordinate the achievement of these goals with students, providers and employers. She will also be co-ordinating the Futures Academy. Miss Paki comes from a dynamic background which includes a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, overseas experience on superyachts, running a business in the trades, among others.

In 2020 Jessie Chang, Year 13, won the competition for the naming of our Pānui. Jessie researched and consulted with Toni Heke-Ririnui, the education manager for Ngāti Ranginui iwi.

Parents of our new Deputy Principal Whaea Ngawai Hooker were officially welcomed to our College at our Powhiri on Wednesday 3 February.

Before we closed the book on the strange and unusual year that was 2020, Creative Bay of Plenty shared a bit of beauty with us to herald the goodness we wish for the coming year.

Tauranga Girls’ College and the Acorn Foundation invite applications from students to apply for a Scholarship, from a fund of up to $2000.

Over the summer break a number of our senior international students choose to stay with us rather than return home, otherwise they would not have been allowed back into the country by Immigration New Zealand.

In early December our Senior A Volleyball team travelled to Christchurch for a replacement national tournament.
