Principal's Word - Term 4 Week 3

    by Jo Hunnikin

Kia ora everyone,

It's hard to know where to start, we've had such a great week! On Tuesday evening we held our Sports and Cultural Awards at the Shears Pavillion and it was a jam-packed ceremony.

We presented an unprecedented amount of colours at the awards - my citations stretched to 19 pages long! How fantastic it was to see so many of our students on stage. I said this last year but it's worth repeating, here at Waimate High School, we certainly punch above our weight in the sporting arena! And what a guest speaker, Liam Messam, his message was about appreciating family, looking deep inside to work out what your personal values are and staying true to them and trying to do good whenever you can. I have to thank the PTA, Nicole Cooney and Kellie Tagiaia for making it an occasion to be proud of.

Our Year 13 students have been enjoying their last week doing dress up and challenging the teachers to volleyball, basketball and netball. I became the self-appointed coach of the volleyball and basketball staff team, having never played a game of either! It turns out that didn't matter as the staff won convincingly in both of the games. It's netball today with students being the favourites to take out the final game.

As it's the start of the term we are opening the Term 3 policy review. This term we are reviewing our "Health Education" policy, "Student Assessment and Achievement" policy, "Distance learning" policy and "Home learning" policy. The review is open until the end of the term.

To find our policies:

  • Click on this link https://www.schooldocs.co.nz/ (or google "school docs").

  • Search for "Waimate High School" (or you can use this link to go straight there)

  • Click on a policy and if you wish to submit feedback then click on the red "under review button". The feedback can be anonymous or you can add your name.

  • A link to the School Docs site will also be available through our school website.

Today we've had a "backing black" mufti day to support the All Blacks in their upcoming final.

Have a lovely weekend,

Jo
