Collaboration and Creativity in Choosing Time

Friday afternoons are always a highlight in the Wai-iti block, and this week was no exception! The children eagerly embraced their choosing time, engaging in a variety of activities that sparked creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.

With options including Lego, puzzles, Studyladder, magnetics, drawing, trains, and the dolls house, there was something for everyone. It was wonderful to see the children making choices that suited their interests and working together to create, build, and explore. Choosing time continues to be a valuable part of the week, allowing children to explore their interests while developing important social and problem-solving skills. We look forward to many more Fun Friday afternoons!

Orchards In Schools visit Wairākei

Last week an organisation called Orchard In Schools visited Wairākei School. The year 6 enviro group were involved in an initial meet-up and teaching session.

Orchards In Schools is a legacy project which fosters children's understanding of cultivating their own food. Melissa Thompson is the co-ordinator and she spoke with the enviro group about looking after fruit trees. The plan is to plant 12 fruit trees in a few weeks time. Before this happens there is plenty of prep work to be carried out by our tamariki.

The enviro group learnt about codling moths and the need to pick up the apples which have fallen off our current apple trees and onto the ground - these are attaching wasps.

It was great to see the group get stuck in and pick up all of the apples and sort them into piles, either for composting or eating.

There will be more updates as this project gets underway further.

Great job - Elisha, Phoebe, Ruben, Luis, Ollie, Seongmin, Muhe, Harmony, Eve-vee, Isaac, Lachlan!
