The Football First XI team were victors at the Gary Sowden South Island Satellite Tournament during winter sports week at the end of August. This is the second year in a row that OGHS has won this tournament.

Seniors have just completed their parallel examinations and will be receiving their marked work back over the next week. It is extremely important that the girls spend time going through their returned work, reflecting on the feedback received and identifying what they need to do to be successful in the external NCEA examinations which begin in early November.

The following students have gained these results in the Australian Chemistry Quiz.

Congratulations to Briarna King from 12Mrt who has been awarded the Otago Community Trust Outward Bound Scholarship for 2016. 

These girls from 10Crl competed in the Otago Extra social sciences quiz. The girls competed well and gained 13th place out of 51 teams.

The main project for this term was food - food waste and food production!

On Friday 12 August Dr Gwynaeth McIntyre (University of Otago) visited the Latin and Classics classes. Dr McIntyre shared her Latin expertise and specialist knowledge with the students in a presentation about the Aeneid – the Roman story of Troy.

It was great to have staff, students and parents at the annual Sports Awards evening on 6 September to celebrate the high level of sporting achievements at Otago Girls’ and to see girls being recognised for their commitment and dedication.

During Winter tournament week the Senior A basketball team competed in the South Island Secondary schools’ tournament in Christchurch and finished 13th.

The annual Alliance Française Concours Oral took place on Saturday 20 August at the University of Otago. This competition was well attended by high schools from all around Otago and Southland. We had a number of girls take part in this competition and they all achieved excellent results.

Last Thursday was the 47th Otago Secondary Schools’ Music Festival. Instrumentalists and singers from all our performance groups enjoyed a fantastic day and evening of music making at the Dunedin Town Hall.

OGHS has two pupils in this concert, Rose Stevenson and Ariana Knudson-Hollebon.

Netball South is looking at running a social netball competition for Year 9 to Year 13 players on Friday’s, for six weeks of Term 4, called TGIF Netball (thank god it’s Friday).

On Saturday the 3 September, our four person curling team consisting of skip Samantha Taylor, Sarah Jocelyn, Leah Billyard and Erin Ford travelled up to Naseby for our first ever curling competition above novice level.

On 15 September, at the Edgar Sports Centre, our Pasifika Culture Group, EMPIRE and Wairüa Puhou performed outstandingly at the annual Otago Polynesian Festival. 

At the end of August, 14 Year 12 and 13 commerce students accompanied by Ms Lynch and Miss Bates, spent a few days in the Capital soaking up the sights and visiting some important businesses. 

The OGHS Sports Council allocates money each year to support athletes.

We are looking for caring OGHS families who would like to welcome an international student into their home in 2017.

From August 15 to August 19 Year 13 PE were in the mountains of the Cardrona Valley near Wanaka learning how to cross country ski. The weather was incredible for the whole week and the trip itself was very memorable. 

On Friday 2 September a group of 14 students from Year 9 and 10 had the opportunity to participate in the first Otago U15 Secondary School Girls' Rugby Tournament, held here in Dunedin. 

As a part of my role as Academic Prefect for 2016, I identified that many students struggle to know how to study and where they can go to for help and resources.
