Friday 2nd May:
Kia ora Parents and Whānau,
Welcome to term 2
Our term has started well and the children have settled into their learning routines very well indeed. A positive tone prevails throughout the school. Let's hope that the current bout of rainy weather is short-lived.
At assembly this week we complimented the children and staff for the excellent way they finished last term. The children across the whole school were fully and happily engaged with their learning right up to the 3pm bell on that last day. It was a lovely way to finish.
Term 2 is a 9 week term and it will be action packed. Below is an outline of some of the main events:
8 May Senior Cross Country YR5-8
13 May Tāima Kōrero Time 2 Talk Information Evening
20 May Zone Cross Country
29 May Junior Cross Country YR1-4 - 11.15 - 12.30pm
2 June King's Birthday - School Closed for Instruction
3 June Teacher Only Day - Mathematics Curriculum - School Closed for instruction
6 June Matariki Celebration at school
16-26 June Life Education at school
18 June Optional Learning Conferences #1 (3.15-7pm) - notice to come home soon
20 June Matariki - School Closed for instruction
24 June Optional Learning Conferences #2 (2-7pm - School closes 1:45pm) notice to come home soon
26 June Pasifika Sau-ia Festival
27 June Last day of term
Devices
Please be vigilant in the way you are monitoring devices. We are noticing more and more issues spilling into school life from electronic social media exchanges between children happening out of school hours. Our learning time is valuable. We don't want to be wasting this precious time by spending time unravelling child issues caused by out of school use of devices. We are asking all our parents to step up here.
Tāima Kōrero - Time 2 Talk
7pm, Tuesday 13 May
Please put this important date in your diary. This is a really important information evening that every parent should attend. Knowing about and protecting our children from the harmful effects of the porn industry should be every parent's priority. We all need to be savvy in the online activity of our children. I look forward to seeing a big turnout to this event.
Road Crossing at the Front of School
Please be vigilant about crossing at the supervised road crossing. It is important as parents that we role model the correct road crossing procedures at the very busy road at the front of school
Life Education visiting in Weeks 8 and 9
Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education bus will be visiting Queenspark Te Hua Mānuka. All learning teams will be involved with Life Education this year. Topics for each learning team are dependent on the need and range from healthy eating to building resilience and being kind. We look forward to hosting Harold and his team again this term.
Term 2 Teacher Only Day - Mathematics and Statistics
On Tuesday 3rd June there will be a Ministry of Education Teacher Only Day on the refreshed Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum. This day will continue to support the teachers with the implementation of the refreshed curriculum and the transition of learning expectations for teachers and ākonga/students.

Term 4:
Kia ora Whānau,
Welcome to term 4. The first week has flown by and the children are well and truly back into good learning routines with their respective teachers. We hope that you were able to enjoy some quality time with your children over the recent holiday period.
Term 4 is a short term and after this week there is only 8 full weeks left until the last day of the school year. We have planned a full programme and we look forward to our children making the most of every day at school this term. To help us with the busy term ahead we would love it if you could do the following:
Check that they are wearing their sunhat every day (term 1 and term 4 are the terms to bring hats to school)
That they are getting to school and into their classroom before the 8.55 am bell each day
They are getting adequate sleep and that bedtimes are adhered to
Their lunches are healthy and energy giving
You have a discussion about our 3 R's and what they look like for your child at home and at school
That you ensure that any homework tasks are followed up and completed
You talk through any people problems that arise and that you empower and model to your child to own situations as they apply to them and how they might take the responsibility to solve a problem.
You encourage age appropropriate self management skills
New Families:
We welcome our new families to QPS. We hope your child has settled in well and is starting to make some new friends. A special welcome to our new Mums and Dads also. We look forward to getting to know you over this term.
Internet and digital Safety:
Digital safety is a daily teaching priority for us and we would like our parents to also make this a priority with your child. So often problems can spill over to school that have originated in the digital world while child has been accessing the internet at home unsupervised.
Netsafe has put together 7 steps to help parents and whānau talk to their young people about online safety. Click on the link below. There is some good information here.
https://netsafe.org.nz/online-safety-for-parents/
Back Gate:
This term the back gate by the car park will be left unlocked after school to enable parents and children to have that all important down time after school in the playground for a short time. We do expect the school grounds to be cleared by 3.30 as the work day continues for teachers who are in teaching planning and preparation mode for the next day. Thank you for anticipated support here.
