RECONNECTING WITH TIMOR-LESTE

The war in Ukraine is bringing a sudden and disproportionate humanitarian crisis to the region. The number of people in humanitarian need has increased dramatically, with an estimated 15.7 million civilians in need of urgent support within the country, including around 7.5 million children according to UNICEF.

Recently, as we helped an Afghani Evacuee family settle into their new home in Hamilton, I stood on the front deck with two Afghani community members, who had come to New Zealand some years ago. I commented on the noisy road, and said, ‘You’ll soon get used to that noise’. The response came back – ‘It’s quieter than gunfire!’
