On Thursday 8 June some Year 5 and 6 students accepted the challenge of attending the Inaugural Maths Madness Competition at EBIS. The teams were:

We had to be at EBIS for 5:15pm. We walked into the library where we were faced with tables with signs on them. The signs told us where our team was to sit. We got free bottles of water and began drinking like we had trekked through the Sahara Desert. Some people were nervous and some people were wild and crazy.

At 5:30 we began. First we did basic facts. There were 30 questions to answer in four minutes. The trick was the paper had to circulate around the table so everyone had to answer one question and then pass the paper on.

Then it was time to face the problem solving. We had 30 minutes to complete 20 questions. As we finished each question we had a designated runner who got the work marked. We had to get the question correct to be able to move on. If we passed on the question, we couldn’t go back to it.

When the challenges were complete we had free snacks and sandwiches, and we all rushed to the bathroom because we had drunk so much water.

Finally the prize giving. In the third place we had Seatoun Eratosthees, in second place it was Seatoun Fibonacci, and in first place it was Kilbirnie Kakapo.

It was a great event to be part of and we want to say thank you to Mr Finnigan for organising this for us. We hope we can do it again!
