Kia ora e te whānau,
Welcome back to Term 3! A very busy (and so far a little chilly 🥶) term.
Have you been enjoying the World Cup? There is a real buzz out there amongst our students as the competition has progressed. I have loved watching our own competition that has been running at lunchtime - wonder which country will win the Silverdale World Cup?
Over the past week, I have received quite a number of questions from our families in response to our termly attendance updates that we sent out. It is great to have a chance to chat with people about attendance and see how we can work together to improve outcomes for everyone.
Recently, the Ministry of Education released a document, showing a renewed focus on increasing attendance across the country. They informed schools of our role in informing our community and ensuring everyone is aware of the attendance rates of their children.
Everyday attendance is important. The Ministry of Education has a webpage designed to help answer parents' questions about attendance. You can check this out here.
Another question I have been asked is about Unjustified Absence. The term Unjustified Absence is a Ministry term to code an absence. The policy is rather narrow when it comes to a justified absence - reasons mainly being medical or to attend a funeral. All other absences are classified as unjustified - i.e. outside of the policy. When parents read this, it can come as a shock. It doesn’t mean that the absence was deemed unnecessary (i.e. a mental health day, visiting a grandparent etc), but it isn’t officially a justified reason from a Ministry of Education / Education Act point of view.
When we notice a pattern of absence, we are obliged to follow this up and generally, this means starting a korero with a family and seeing how we can work together to bring attendance over 90% (regular attendance).
In some cases, attendance matters get passed on to Bluelight - the support service working with a number of schools around Hamilton. Their job is to meet with families and offer ways/support to get learners back into school.
I do want to stress, however - we still appreciate families keeping their unwell children home, especially as the winter bugs are actively doing the rounds. Since the pandemic, we are all far more aware of the ways cold and flu illnesses spread - thanks for doing your part in keeping our community safe.
As always, if you would like to discuss anything - please feel free to get in contact. I am happy to set up a time to chat.
Nga mihi nui,
Michael Harrop
Principal
