Careers Speed Date
This event is designed to provide an opportunity for our Year 9 students to learn about a host of different careers, meet local and regional employers/employees and be able to ask them questions.
Future pathways planning is challenging for students and this is an innovative and fun way of supporting them in this process.
So how does this event work?
Each career representative will have a station to sit at (table and chair) with 5 other seats for students. These stations will be in rows throughout the school hall. Students will move through the stations in groups of 5, every 7 minutes. The students will have a Careers Booklet which lists each career station, has space for them to make notes and contains prompts to assist them to ask pertinent questions. A bell will sound to signal the end of 7 minutes and for groups to move to the next station in the row.
What information will students be given?
Career representatives will spend approximately 4-5 minutes outlining the industry sector explaining their job and what it involves. They will speak about what knowledge, skills and dispositions are needed for the role and the pathway that can be taken (e.g. studied a Bachelor of Teaching at Waikato University for 3 years or completed a 2 year electrical apprenticeship). They may also talk about the benefits of working in that role/industry and what they are most passionate about. For the remaining 2-3 minutes students will be able to ask them questions.
In preparation for Wednesday, Year 9 students will meet with Mrs Fielder on Tuesday during Enrich time. Mrs. Fielder will outline the expectations for the event, the process and how to use the Career Booklets.
Please ensure your child arrives at school by 9.50am in the correct uniform on Wednesday.
