Hart O'Reilly Trophy safe for another year.

Graeme Campbell - May 24, 2017

Lincoln University Division One Rugby team played some scintillating rugby in trying conditions to overcome a strong Varsity side on the 20th of May

With an Antarctic blast covering the country and the Canterbury University grounds at Ilam in ankle deep mud the day started off with the Div 2 Wethers and the Women's side battling against UC. Unfortunately the unbeaten run of the Wethers came to an end with the sides first loss of the season going down 12 - 27. The lads found the going tough after UC scored two quick tries. Being able to exit from their half on the soggy pitch proved too much to the team. The will be looking for a reversal of form this weekend when they take on 9th placed Burnside.

The Lincoln Women have been playing some great rugby this season having picked up good victories against Kaiapoi, Sydenham, BDI and Burnside. They were taught a lesson however when they took on the three year Champions. Varsity dominated in most aspects and came away with a good win 74 - 12. The Ewes have the BYE this week but will come back strongly when they play Linwood after Queens Birthday.

In the feature match for the Hart/O'Reilly Trophy the Lincoln lads came ready to play for this important second and third placed fixture. LU were able to score seven tries through a physical display from the forwards and excellent lines from the backs. Nick Werahiko picked up three in his 98th senior game as well as the MVP.

The team had a good lead 24 - 3 at the half time break and were able to continue to score throughout the second half to come away with the match 43 - 10 at full time. The Club was very grateful for the hospitality shown by UC Rugby and all present thoroughly enjoyed the comradery at the club rooms. This weekend they will take on Belfast at Sheldon Park at 2:45pm.
