Women Won, Men None

Graeme Campbell - June 29, 2017

The crowd was entertained by two very exciting games of basketball for the finals of the Premier Men's and Women's, Hoben and Patron's trophy matches, for the first round of the Canterbury Basketball Association competition.

The Lincoln University Women's basketball team exacted revenge on North Canterbury, after their one point round 5 loss, when they took out the Patron's Trophy match on Saturday 24 June at Cowles Stadium. With players from both sides representing the Alloyfold Canterbury Wildcats at the WBC final round playoffs it was always going to be a tight match.

Lincoln led at the end of the first quarter 12 - 8 and continued to apply the pressure in the 2nd spell to finish the half narrowly leading 25 - 23. North Canterbury regrouped and put on a strong scoring burst along with a more dominant defensive pattern to pull out to an eight point lead 46 - 38 at the end of the third.

Lincoln fought back strongly in the final stages with some good three point action to pull back the lead to 55 all. From there Lincoln were able to hold on to win 60 - 56 and with it the the Patron's Trophy title for the 2nd year running.

In the Premier Men's Hoben Trophy match Lincoln took on the unbeaten Pioneer Pacers in what turned out to be an epic encounter. Lincoln Uni came out firing and were able to build to a good lead 22 - 17 at the quarter break. Points were evenly scored throughout the next spell with the Pacers edging out LU at the half 36 - 33.

Pioneer held on to a slender lead 56 - 53 at the final quarter with Lincoln beginning to break the tight defence. Trailing 67 - 73 with minutes remaining Lincoln hit three 2 pointers to tie the match with extra time looking like being on the cards. However a baseline sneak by Pioneer that drew the foul took the match away from the valiant Lincoln Lads who eventually went down 73 - 76. Roll on the Championship round.
