LU Netball building combinations
Graeme Campbell - June 28, 2017
Mid-way through the second round of competition the Premier A and B sides are having their ups and downs in terms of results on the court. The A team started off the month of June with a draw against St Nicholas A 55 all that was followed by a narrow loss to Technical A 41 - 46. They regrouped to beat Saints by nine, 55 - 46 but succumbed to the impressive Kereru A team on Tuesday 27 June 45 – 57 to have them sitting in third place on the table. The final match of the round will be against 6th placed Halswell on Tuesday 4th July at the Bishopdale YMCA at 6:30pm.
LU Premier B side have had a disruptive season with many players filling in for the Premier A during the first round resulting in a lack of team unity and cohesion. Their first match had them narrowly losing to Kereru C 43 – 46 followed by a losses to St Margaret’s A 49 – 60, Kereru B 44 – 62 and St Nicholas B 39 – 60 on Tuesday evening. They will play second placed Kai Toa A on the 4th of July at the Bishopdale YMCA at 8:05pm. They will have to also play a promotion relegation match on Sunday 9 July against the top placed finisher of the Saturday Senior 1 competition.
The consistency of the LU C team, who play in the 2nd Division A Section 1 grade, has been on show as they continue to record strong wins against good oppositions. At the start of the competition round on the 10th of June they picked up a 40 – 16 win over Marist/Albion followed by a 26 – 11 win of CFC A. Saturday’s match against ChCh Girls High B was a much closer encounter with the team only managing to take control of the game in the final quarter. The 31 – 27 win places them top of the table with two games to go, until the championship round, against Avonside Girls High A this Saturday followed by Suburbs on the 8th of July.
Lincoln University Netball D team play in the same Division as the C team but in section 4. They have been unlucky not to be three wins from three in their latest round of competition having narrowly lost two matches within 3 points. They lost 18 – 21 against CNC B on the 10th of June and another narrow loss against Belfast B 26 - 29 the following week. Last weekend they tipped up Marian College B 26 – 21 to leave them in 3rd place on the table. They will take on the two top contenders St Nicholas D and Sumner/Redcliffs A respectively over the next two weeks.
LU Social Netball that plays in the Selwyn Netball competition and have been tracking well in this round of competition. Unfortunately the Uni Holidays has resulted in players being unavailable over the last two weeks. Social 1 are currently sitting in 3rd place with two good wins over Halswell S2 19 - 18 and Tai Tapu S1 42 - 14. Social 2 also sit in 3rd place with wins over Broadfield S1 38 - 20 and a tight win over Burnham S2 32 - 31. The Social 3 team are in 2nd place with wins over Lincoln S3 33 - 13 and Southbridge S3 30 -17.
