LU Basketball begins season well
Graeme Campbell - May 29, 2017
The Premier Men's and Women's first round basketball competitions are into their penultimate rounds with the Lincoln University sides potentially placed to make the cup finals.
Only the top two teams at the end of the round will compete for the respective cups. Our Premier Women had a top of the table clash against North Canterbury and narrowly missed out on the win by one point going down 57 - 58 to leave them in 2nd place with two matches to go against Pioneer and Wolverines.
The Premier Men's side struggled against an unbeaten Pioneer Pacers side. Although the side played some accurate ball the experience of the Pacers paid off and they were able to pick up the win 71 - 62. LU are currently sitting in fourth place on 6 points with two games to play. the 2nd and 3rd placed teams of Atami (7 points) and UC (8 points) have both played 5 matches so the finalists will be found in the next two weeks. Regardless LU will need to win both of their remaining games to be in with a chance.
Lincoln University U23 Bulls are still unbeaten after 59 matches and they sit top of the table with Gators on 10 points as they approach the half way point in their round robin. On Saturday the side was able to build on a six point lead from the half time break to come away eventual winners 88 - 72.
Rounding out the weekend results was the Women's U23 side side that play on Sunday. They will play three full round robins against the five other teams in their grade. To date they have had convincing victories over all teams apart from Halswell whom they will face after Queens Birthday weekend. On Sunday the team played the Wolverines and were able to continually build the points difference to come out on top 82 - 43.
