Monday Night Netball Hits the Mark
Graeme Campbell - August 13, 2019
Two courts, 80 players making up eight teams, one coordinator (thanks Claire) the B-team referees and plenty of supporters out on the LU Netball courts for what has arguably been called the best fun since the Yaldy the other day.
The nine week competition kicked off back in the month of May for four weeks before having a break over exams and the holidays before resuming mid July for the final push to the play-offs.
Last weeks semifinals produced some close matches and a fair amount of trash talk from the competitors as they found out who their final opponents were going to be.
The 7th and 8th match between the J Yellow and I Red teams resulted in a good win to the yellows 37-18. 5th and 6th placed the K Pinks v F Navy Blue with the pinks coming out in 5th in a low scoring match 14-8.
The 3rd and 4th playoff was an exhilarating match between the physically dominant D Green team and the all women E Yellow side. The skill and agility of the E team was matched blow by blow with the size and power of the D's. Big Dan lived up to his name securing ball from the night sky and delivering to the hoop to eventually outscore the valiant E's in one of the tightest matches of the evening 28-22.
The grand final was against the Purple G's and the Orange H side. Speed, manoeuvrability, skill and passion were exhibited throughout the match, and that was just from the supporters. The players, mainly 3rd and 4th year students, came from a range of local flats with both sides having members from the same flats which added to the spice of the competition. In the end it was the accuracy of the Orange H's that prevailed as they went on to win the 2019 LU Social Monday Night Netball League Championship 23-11.
A massive thanks to Claire Lewis for her organisation, The B Team umpires and all the players and supporters for being involved. We hope you are all looking forward to 2020.
