Tohu Whenua, Landmarks in and Around Our Community

Judah Isaac - September 18, 2023

Learning about our local history helps us to connect to our Turangawaewae so that we can strengthen our sense of connection to places and each other.

Recently, Room Nine have been devoting time and energy to construct presentations on certain landmarks in and around the local areas of Newlands, Paparangi and Johnsonville. We discussed topics like what makes a landmark? Or, why are landmarks important?

We were divided into groups to research and construct slideshows on landmarks such as Johnsonville Library, Ngā Hau e Whā Marae, Newlands Community Centre, Keith Spry Pool, Paparangi school and many more. We had class discussions over the importance of landmarks and we decided that a landmark is important because it is a physical structure that helps connect you to your home or a place that you want to be.

A landmark brings people together and can be a place to meet and thrive with others. A landmark can ultimately be what represents a place. If you think of Paris, you would probably also think of the Eiffel Tower. If you think of New York, you would also think about Lady Liberty or the Empire State Building

In the opinion of Room Nine, we think that the landmarks we have going for our local area are pretty cool. During Room Nine’s topic of local landmarks, Ngā Wawata and the rest of the school, inquired about the history of significant people, places and things that are connected to the land around us.

We are so lucky that we have lots of places that represent the area of Johnsonville, Newlands, Paparangi and Wellington!
