Board of Trustees 20 October 2022

Board of Trustees  by Te Kura o Kirikiri Tatangi - Seatoun School

Kia ora koutou

Thanks to all those who stood for the board. There was a great caliber of candidates and the results were close. New to the board we have Nolen Smith, Leana Louw and Jayne Carey as the teacher's representative.

The Ministry of Education is introducing the equity index to replace the decile system which informs how funding is allocated to public schools. The equity index reflects the background of our community which drives future outcomes for our students. Indications so far are that Seatoun School will have reduced funding next year which will compromise our ability to provide programs at the school. You can help by ensuring you pay your enrichment fees, activity fees and voluntary fees, so thank you to those who have already paid. Please also remember that the school donations are tax deductible.
The school provides additional services and activities to enhance learning outcomes that are not government funded. These services include an additional four learning support staff and our fantastic librarian. The additional staff allows us to be more flexible with our education program enabling us to provide a library, remedial and accelerated learning programs, enrichment and STEM programs. This also provides time for teacher release to allow lesson planning and preparation. Donations also enable the school to support sports, band and the orchestra. The reduction in funding is likely to be in the order of 10% and will have an impact. The Board believes that all these areas are core to delivering our schools values and would like to have your feedback.
The Board will be sending out a parent survey which is an opportunity to provide your feedback regarding a variety of areas. The survey should take no more than 15 minutes so please take the time to respond as your responses will help shape the school.

Over the term 3 break contractors have been installing heat pumps in the upstairs classrooms which finishes the upstairs heating and ventilation system just in time for summer. With the end of term 3, it has been great to have parents back in school to see the year 7/8 review and talent quest, which was a great success showcasing the many talents of our students. Please feel free to come onto the school grounds with your child and check out their work displayed on the walls outside their classroom.
Ngā mihi John, Charlotte, Nolen, Jayne, Nick, Justin and Leana
