Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, 2023

Kia ora e te whānau!

Kia hari te tau hou!

Nau mai, haere mai!

Welcome back for the 2023 school year!

I hope that you all have had a relaxing and refreshing summer break with your amazing children. I have absolutely loved reconnecting with our learners and school community - there is a lot of excited energy out there and a keenness to get stuck in to another great year of learning and discovery.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our NEW whānau who have joined the Silverdale community this year. We are so glad to have you. I know that moving to a new school or community can be a bit daunting at times - but you have come to a very warm and welcoming school! One of our guiding school principles is Whanaungatanga and it is our goal to help you feel connected and part of the school family. I would also love to connect with you in the coming weeks and share with you a bit about our school and why we love it so much. Feel free to contact our school office and make an appointment, I'd love to chat with you.

To our returning whānau and learners, welcome back! It is great to see you all back in your classes and playing around the school again - it hasn't been the same without you. I hope that you are excited about the year ahead and all the opportunities that are in front of us in 2023. As always, our school is here to help - if you have any questions about anything, don't hesitate to get in touch with either your child's classroom teacher or myself.

Getting to know our learners and their families is another important part of whanaungatanga at Silverdale. This is why every year we start off with a time of connection and korero with you - the expert on your child! You will see in this newsletter an opportunity to book a conversation with your child's teacher. I'd like to encourage you to do so! We are excited to meet with you and get to know our students from your perspective and map out some goals for the year ahead.

At these conversations, you will also have the opportunity to hear about Seesaw. This online platform is your window into the classroom. Throughout the year, a portfolio of learning experiences will build for your child, including video clips, images and samples of work. We also use Seesaw as our reporting tool (the old "School Reports"). More information on our reporting system can be found by watching this video.

We like to keep you up to date with events and all things school related. Our fortnightly newsletters are one way we do this. We also communicate through our school app, calendar, email and our Facebook page. If you would like details on how to access any of these - please contact our school office.

Looking forward to connecting with you as the year continues!

Michael Harrop

Principal

PTG News

by Priscilla Thatcher

Here at Silverdale Normal School we are lucky to still have a PTG that makes a real positive difference to our school. The PTG provides events and supports learners with projects, outings, as well as learning and play materials that otherwise would not be able to be provided. We are a small group and we really need new members to help us continue with this great work. Every year members leave once their children have moved onto their next schools and our member numbers are getting smaller. You do not have to be involved in every meeting or event, just when your schedule allows would be greatly appreciated. We would love to meet you! We hold two meetings each term at 7.00pm; some are held in person in the staff room and some are on zoom to accommodate all, these meetings go for around an hour. We discuss upcoming events and items that the school would love to bring to our Tamariki, to make their Silverdale experience the best we can, please consider joining us.
