Silverdale Normal School

Newsletter Week 6 / 7, Term 1, 2023

Kia ora e te whānau -

I trust the term is going well for you all. It has been amazing to see all the excited learners around the school engaging in all the opportunities.

I am incredibly proud of Silverdale Normal School. We have an active community of involved whanau, courageous learners who show kindness, and staff that are dedicated to the success and growth of all our students. We are, however, in a constant struggle with the Ministry of Education around adequate resourcing. This is ultimately about our students and ensuring we have everything we need to provide the best schools and learning that we can. We firmly believe that our children are worth the very best.

By now, you will know that teachers around the country (Primary, Secondary and Kindergarten) and Principals (Primary and Area Schools) have declared enough is enough. We desire a schooling system that not only meets the needs of our learners - but is OPTIMUM. A schooling system that we can be proud of.

In response, teachers and principals around the country stand united and send a message to the government that we want change.

Our government needs to do better on:

- improving support for tamariki- more staff to support learning- better recognition for the work of primary / secondary teachers and primary principals- value and respect for our kindergarten teachers

These are the real reasons (no matter what you might have heard in the media etc) for the strike on Thursday. No one wants to close our schools. We have been raising these issues for years with our government. Our children are important and we desire the very best for them. If you would like to join and support change for the better, please see the email from our NZEI Representative that was sent to your Seesaw account.

Thanks for partnering with us!
