Poupou Art

Bobbie Jo Pringle - November 28, 2023

Year 8 students starting to create poupou for the school environment.

A poupou is a wall panel located underneath the veranda of a Māori wharenui. It is generally built to represent the spiritual connection between the tribe and their ancestors. Our year 8 students are creating these as a representation of themselves.

This week the year 8 students started the physical construction of the poupou they designed last term. The poupou will be put in the school environment as a legacy from the leaving year 8 students of 2023.

Part of the process involved the students cutting the head design out of plywood with a jigsaw before sanding and sealing the shape. We look forward to being able to put the poupou in place before the end of the term.
