I have been delighted by the way that the school year has started. The boys are positive around school (they are singing the school song better than in previous years), they are polite and I appreciate the greetings I get from the boys. There is a great sense of anticipation about the building of the Hall. This will provide a wonderful focal point to foster community connection and a sense of belonging.

The Wilson Library opened this week in its new location, The Big Room. This is a temporary location until the new block is built. 

Throughout term 1, nine Year 10 boys volunteered to attend one day a week of rain, cold, wet, dark, difficult and stressful situations, in an endeavour to discover what qualities of men are grown in times of physical and mental testing and team support. 

On the 13th of April, Ben Hartland and I were lucky enough to find ourselves hopping on a plane heading to Sri Lanka and Singapore on The Willows Cricket Club Youth Tour. An amazing opportunity we both feel very grateful for. 

Christchurch Boys' High School's Careers Department continues to drive new initiatives around exposing our young men to the world to which they will soon be entering. Our Vocational Pathways Year 10 Programme aims to kick-start the school to work transition for students by raising their awareness of what is needed to be a productive member of the workforce.

Congratulations to Ben Bickerstaff-Ginders who has accepted an apprenticeship with his Gateway employer, Clive Barrington the Architects Builder. Clive Barrington are one of New Zealand's most award winning and iconic architectural builders. We wish Ben well with his apprenticeship and his exciting career ahead. 

As I reflect on events from 2017 and discuss education with my principal colleagues from across the country, it’s very clear that there a number of challenging issues our boys are facing right now. 

Sue Suckling OBE is the Chair of NZQA. Sue holds a number of other significant directorships including being the Chair of Callaghan Innovation. Sue will be speaking about the future of qualifications in the CBHS Big Room at 6:00pm on the evening of May 17. 

The annual 1st XV rugby fixture between Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christ’s College will take place at Straven Road on Thursday June 1st.

The School will be open to the public on Tuesday 23rd May from 4pm – 7pm. Prospective students and their families, and members of the local community, are welcome to visit at this time.

Former Head Boy, Jake Bailey is launching his autobiography “What Cancer Taught Me” on May 12 at a private function at school. Jake has generously offered that the profit from the sales of his book through the PTA will be donated to the school. 

The boys in Years 9-11 have now been using their devices for a term and we have been very pleased with the integration of eLearning across curriculum areas. The boys have been very positive about their BYOD experience so far and have provided valuable feedback.

The PTA were again happy to cater for the morning tea held after this year’s ANZAC Service. Special thanks to Tania Izard and the PTA helpers who made scones and sandwiches and served tea and coffee to all the visitors.

In early April, Christchurch Boys’ High School was very privileged to host Paarl Boys' High School from the Western Cape in South Africa. Paarl BHS was established in 1868, with a current roll of 850 boys, and has produced 20 Springbok players in its time, making it South Africa’s most notorious rugby school.

We have a large number of students involved in two of the largest traditional annual inter schools fixtures coming up this term.
