Sports Updates

Basketball

The Friday night competition continues with some great results from our teams. Finals are coming up so if you can get along and support our teams that would be great.

South Canterbury reps

Cayden Halsey and Ivan Orbase have been playing in the South Canterbury U15 Black team and Dillan Sami and Riley Nicholls in the South Canterbury U15 Green team for the Years 9 and 10 basketball season. They have had a number of tournaments this year from Invercargill to Rangiora, culminating in the Mainland Tournament held in Christchurch over the holidays. In this tournament, the SC Black team was unbeaten in their pool, won the semi-final, and went on to a nail-biting final where they went down to Nelson, placing them 2nd place in the Tournament. A fantastic season for our Representative Basketball players.

Netball

In the holidays we had a team attend the SISS Junior Netball tournament in Christchurch. The team played some excellent netball over 3 days and ended up 21st in the combined grade. They also won the Team Sportsmanship award for the combined grade which is a great achievement demonstrating that our students compete in a great sporting manner.

Aoraki Netball Champs

We had our Senior A team take part in the Aoraki Netball Champs on Sunday 30th July in Ashburton. The team was 5th in the A grade competition.

Swimming

Thomas Anderson had a successful weekend in Blenheim swimming at the South Island Short Course Champs. He made the finals in all his events getting 4th in the 100m Fly and winning a silver medal in the 50m Fly. His 50m Fly time qualified him for the NZ Short Course Champs to be held in Napier next month where he’ll also be swimming in the 50m Freestyle after qualifying at the Division II Champs in May.

Thomas also took part in the NZ Schools swimming champs and these are his results from that meet:

  • 50 Fly 29.13
  • 50 Free 26.89
  • 100 Free 59.00
  • 200 Free 2.13.55
  • 50 Back 32.68
  • 50 Breast 36.36
  • 100 Breast 1.22.16
  • 200 Breast 2.59.61,
  • 100 IM 1.10.25.

His highest placing was 13th in the 50 Fly.

Cycling

Kyra Marett had another successful weekend at South Island schools road championships. On Saturday Kyra had the time trial. It didn’t go exactly to plan, but she still won the bronze medal.

Sunday was her road race. Kyra rode away from the rest of the field with 1km to go and had a convincing win of the gold medal and the Skoda jersey.

Rugby

During the holidays, 7 Geraldine girls were invited to attend the Aoraki Combined U18 Camp & Tournament. The team was made up of girls from Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury & North Otago playing against teams from Christchurch, Tasman & Taupo.

After coming together as a team that morning, the team had a tough start with the first game against eventual tournament winner Christchurch Girls High 1st XV. The team included former Geraldine pupil Maelle Rosignol and Aoraki went down. A win against Taupo and a loss vs Christchurch FC concluded day one.

The evening's antics had all 6 teams come together for a meal and a challenge of a skit. Considering the girls only came together at 9.30 that morning, their skit was well done.

Day two was an early start with team photos at 9am and a game vs Christchurch Girls High 2nd XV at 10am. The girls' cohesion from the challenge was obvious as they had a comfortable win. A draw vs Tasman after some dubious decisions had the team playing off for 3rd place against Taupo. A fiery encounter had the girls coming out on top 10-7 to cement 3rd, a great reward after all the girls represented their whanau, school & themselves with pride.

FIFA Women's World Cup Soccer

A group of 10 students and Mrs Foley-Smith and Mrs Harding attended the match between Argentina and South Africa on Friday 28 July. Wow what a great game and a golden opportunity for our students to experience some top level football in action. The game was thrilling to watch and ended with a 2-2 draw.

Hockey

Lily Jones went up to Auckland for a week in the holidays as part of the South Canterbury U18 Hockey team and throughout that week we played 6 games. We lost three games and won three games. It was a really good learning experience and I think we all had a great time and I’m looking forward to next year.
