Hukanui Road Code- Help us to keep your children safe!

One of the hardest parts of our school role is addressing poor driving, inappropriate parking practice and disregard for road rules by a very small group of our parents.

Hukanui School are blessed to have the support of Kim Whyte and the Chartwell Management Team in regards to our parents utilising the Chartwell parking facilities. This is a unique agreement and something that not many schools would have access to. It is important to remember that if you are utilising these spaces, that you park in the areas parallel to Hukanui Road. We also ask that you drive carefully, park respectfully and be patient. In short, as Hukanui parents you should be role models of our values.

This week we received a letter of concern from Chartwell Mall highlighting their concern over the actions of a Hukanui driver in their Mall Carpark. We do not wish to name and shame but if there is a repeat, details will be shared with the Police. The Mall also have the right to trespass anyone on their property acting in a manner that is not befitting a public space.

In 2023, the Hamilton City Council sealed the end of Pickering Crescent, installed road barriers to prevent U Turns, created the kiss and drop and assisted us to reduce speed along Rutherford Street. This was a significant accomplishment and 50 years in the making. Unfortunately we still have a very small group of drivers who continue to park on yellow lines, wait in the driveways of our neighbours, double park, choose to abuse school staff dealing with traffic control, complete U Turns in front of the school and others who drive at excessive speed. If you do see examples of poor driving, we would actively encourage you to take a picture and when you are home log into Report a road incident or unsafe driver – *555 and Roadwatch. This is a great tool and repeat offenders are contacted by the Transport Authority. It only takes five minutes and it helps us to keep our Hukanui children safe.

Finally it is important to note that from the beginning of Term 2, 2024 the speed limit in front of any school in NZ will be 30 kph. It is our strong recommendation that all our parents carefully monitor their speed around our school.

Come on Hukanui, we know traffic congestion, parking and school drop off and collection are a challenge. That said, we know that with patience, good planning, sensible decision making and role modelling, we can better protect our people.
