Growing strong mathematicians in Kōpura.
To help make sense of two- and three-digit numbers, students have been using materials such as place value blocks, number lines and abacus. These tools allow them to see what happens when numbers are added or subtracted, making abstract concepts easier to understand.
Our students are learning to solve addition and subtraction problems using a range of different methods, including:
The horizontal method – writing equations in a straight line, e.g., 245 + 128 = ?
The vertical column method – lining numbers up in columns to add or subtract step by step.
By practising both methods, students develop a deeper understanding of how numbers work and can choose the strategy that suits them best.We also focus on mental maths strategies to build quick and confident problem solvers.
Students are learning to:
Use place value knowledge to break numbers apart (e.g., solving 326 - 190 by subtracting 100, then 90).
Partition numbers into smaller, manageable parts (e.g., solving 47 + 36 by adding 40 + 30 and 7 + 6).
Use known facts, such as doubles (e.g., 6 + 6) and halves and making ten (e.g. solving 38 + 7 by making 40 + 5) to make calculations easier.
Cracking Word Problems
A key skill in maths is learning to decode and solve word problems. Our students have been practising turning story problems into equations, helping them understand real-world applications of addition and subtraction.
Through all these strategies, our Kōpura learners are becoming confident, skilled mathematicians.
Keep encouraging your child at home by discussing maths in everyday situations—whether it's adding up grocery costs or working out change. Daily practice at home of addition and subtraction facts along with times tables, will help your child solve problems faster and with greater confidence. With practice and support, their ability will continue to grow!
