Principal's Message

by Sue Cattell

Kia ora whānau. It has been lovely having the Life Education caravan back at school. The children really learn a lot from the sessions, whether it is in the caravan with Jenni and Harold (the giraffe), or with the follow up activities the teachers do.

It all started with a Dot...

by Danelle Patching

Room 14 read the story 'Dot' and it inspired us to create our own dot pictures with a bit of a twist. We chose a colour and put a dot on our page. Then, we created our own pictures around the dot using black pen. If you look closely, you might be able to see the coloured dot that started our creation in each picture!

Room 15 - Report

by Melanie Dixon

On Wednesday the children in Room 15 went to visit Harold the Giraffe and Jenny on the Health Education van. We learned that our bodies need oxygen, good food and water to be healthy. We also talked about what it means to be a good friend. The children especially loved Harolds gift of a magical star which they can pull out of their pockets and use whenever they want to bring a feeling of peace and calm to their bodies. We can do this by holding up our star hand and focus on breathing up to the top of each finger. We then gently breath out as we follow our fingers back down the other side of our fingers to the palm of our hand. We are looking forward to visiting Jenny and Harold again next week!

Caring Learners

by Paula Snowball

In the Hive we have been looking at the concepts of responsibility and causation. We have been learning about making decisions and the positive impact we can have. Here are two photos that show some children taking care of our local environment. They have been sweeping leaves, transferring these leaves to the compost and making sure the area outside the Hive is kept neat and tidy for all to use. Well done Hive, you are so caring and responsible.

Sensing Summer

by Ellen von Collas

The children in Room 19 have been using their senses to explore language. The purpose of the writing was to paint a sensory picture in the reader's mind by describing their summer experiences in the form of a poem. Have a look at our budding authors' summer poems - can you smell, taste, hear and feel summer?

Room 11 - Poetry

by Grant Arendse

The students in Room 11 had a lot of fun working on their Secret Summer poems. First we took a lovely stroll down to the lake to brainstorm all the sights, sounds and smells of Summer. Next we wandered back up to the field and found a shady spot under a tree to continue our brainstorming. Being outside was very inspiring! We then went back to class and wrote our poems, making sure to include lots of interesting adjectives and to do some editing once our first draft was completed.

Machine Muscle Makes the Mahi Manageable

by Ellen von Collas

Big sticks have been piling up in the compost area. They usually take AGES to break down into usable compost, so we pulled out our mighty mulching machine to give us a bit more muscle on the job. Mrs Sommers and Mrs von Collas were grateful to Harry and Cavallo from the Hive, our star helpers who helped to feed the sticks into the machine. We had to be careful those pesky sticks didn't whip us as they jiggled and wiggled their way down the mulcher. We were also very careful to keep our hands out of the machine.

MUSIC NEWS

by Eugenie Middleton

In Year 3- 6 music classes, we have all been learning how to play the xylophone. We are learning how to hold the beaters correctly, how to care for the instruments and how to listen and respond to melodic lines. We have been risk takers and have all had turns on the big bass marimba - a highlight for some tamariki! Music groups on a Friday are well underway and we are really enjoying playing together once again!

Gardening Club

by Iris Leng

It is another busy Thursday lunchtime for Gardening Club! Thanks to the tamariki's hard work in the past two weeks, the weeds that had grown wild over summer were cleared out of the gardens. This meant that our gardens could start afresh with new plants this week. Firstly, we mixed some compost and fresh soil into the garden beds. Then we dug small holes and planted the seedlings in. Rockets, mesclun and basil were planted today. We also made sure to water the seedlings after planting.
