On Thursday, 14 August we held our annual Cross Country event. The students have been training all term to prepare for the event. Training our cardiovascular system is a great way to keep our tinana (body) healthy.

Looking after our mind and body is an important of learning at Silverdale Normal School. Whakapakari Tinana is a daily part of our senior school.

This term, we are lucky to have had Weston, a student from the 'Waikato University Scientists in Schools programme', working with us in Rooms 8 and 9. We have been exploring the big idea of “how does natural and human activity shape our environment?”

On Tuesday, 22nd August Room 5 learners took part in an online classroom session with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

With careful precision the students completed the patterning and decorating of their Nikau masks ready for a brief garden exhibition.

How lucky are we that the amazing Mrs Mills organized for the Year 3/4/5 and 6 students to visit Hillcrest High School and listen to their Orchestra perform.

Every Monday afternoon all of the junior learners rotate around activities that focus on locomotor skills, stability skills and manipulative skills. This involves doing a range of activities that include jumping, hopping, skipping, balancing and throwing. Each week they do three different activities.

The Kōtuitui learning experiences are designed for kids in year 4 through to 8 and are intended to provide kids with the skills and knowledge to connect to cultures other than their own, both in Aotearoa New Zealand and across the globe. Kōtuitui is coordinated by New Zealand Football and is available to schools throughout the country.

What an exciting way to start the week! On Monday, 4th September all of our Silverdale tamariki were treated to a showcase organised and presented by tertiary students from Te Pukenga (Wintec) called Cre8tive.

We are fortunate to have been donated an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) which is located in the foyer of our School Office. This can be accessed by the public during school office hours.

The PTG will be selling Cadbury chocolate bars for $2.00 each by the staffroom, for the rest of the term. We will be having a community fundraising day for Rainbow Place, more details to come soon. We will have an end of term lunch on Friday, 22nd September. Forms to come home soon.

Held across ten days FOTOFEST brings creativity out into the streets of Hastings, from not just one venue but multiple spaces including laneways, businesses, walls and alleyways across the city. Diego's mum (Maribel Pottstock) will be exhibiting in the Fotofest.

If your child would like to purchase a cup of milo, please give him/her a reusable cup to bring from home (unbreakable if possible). The cost is $1.00 and will available this term from the student kitchen window between 8.30-8.50am.

School will close at 3.00pm on Friday, 22nd September for the school holidays. Term 4 begins on Monday, 9th October.

Waikato Badminton Association is hosting another holiday programme this coming holiday break from 25th to 27th September and 4th to 6th October.

Hamilton’s 2023 Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will again be held at the Waikato University Fields, Hamilton East - with a new date of Sunday, 10 December 2023.

Enrolments are now open for Term Four 2023 at the Waikato Community School of Music (WSCM). Classes begin on Saturday, 14 October and run for eight sessions, ending on Saturday, 9 December. Note there are no classes on the Saturday of Labour Weekend.

The time has come for the September/October School Holiday skill camps! The Poipoia te Manawa Programme is Hamilton City Netball Centre’s Player Development Plan (PDP). The purpose of the development plan is to empower the Netball community by providing opportunities that are development focused and accessible. Poipoia te Manawa means to Nurture the Heart of Netball.

Our community organisation offers a range of adult community education programmes aimed at fostering personal growth, skill development and community engagement for minimal cost. These programmes cover a variety of topics, from trade skills to personal enrichment and well-being.

An action packed day of netball to be held on Thursday, 28th September. This 9am - 3pm session includes skill progression, a limited edition NETFIT clinic t-shirt, personalised feedback and lots of FUN!

Hamilton Aquatics is looking forward to running a Learn to Swim programme at Hillcrest Normal School and Hamilton West schools this coming summer. As a 'warm up' Swim Waikato has arranged a fun, free swimming "have a go" day at Waterworld. See the attached poster.

Hamilton Yacht Club's programmes cater for students aged 8+, and we offer classes especially for teenagers.
