Newsletter Week 8, Term 2, 2021

Kia ora e te whānau,

How is everyone feeling out there in this wet, wintery term? We have had really rainy days and some chilly mornings, but it is really nice to see the sun ☀ out this week! Our fields are starting to dry out a little now - so long may this weather last!

As you will read in this newsletter, our whole staff took part in a Hillcrest wide learning event last week with representatives from Ngāti Hauā. This was such a positive and impacting day for us all. We heard stories and history from our local area which we are now able to begin embedding into our curriculum. The Ministry of Education has asked all schools to include local New Zealand histories in our learning programmes and this was a great way to begin this work. This hui was also a time of connection for us. We have started some conversations with members of the iwi that we hope to progress to real relationship and reciprocal relationships.

Heading out and about throughout the school these past few weeks, I have been so excited to see the active and creative learning going on! We have some amazingly curious scientists here at Silverdale! We really value giving our learners a chance to integrate their learning across the curriculum and see how reading, writing and maths are used in all the different ways we learn and grow. Look out for an invitation in your seesaw inbox sometime soon for a learning showcase in your child's class - this is a chance for you to hear first hand about the learning that has been going on in our classes.

We have a busy couple of remaining weeks left in Term 2. Please take note of some of the dates below. In particular our mid year assembly next week, Wednesday, 1 July at 1.30pm. We are fortunate enough to have been given use of the Hillcrest High School auditorium so that we can gather as a full school family for this assembly. It would be great to see you there!

As always, feel free to get in touch with me directly if you'd like to know more about what we do here at Silverdale or have any questions at all.

Noho ora mai!

Principal

The Parent Teacher Group (PTG) is a group of parents and teachers that work to create fun events for the kids and fundraise for the school. We always welcome new members - we’d love to see some new faces at our meetings. If you can’t commit to meetings but would like to help out at events, please let us know. We especially need parents that can help out during the day occasionally.
