Mānawatia a matariki!
What a week it has been! A lot of action around the school as students dive in a learn all about the significance of Matariki to Aotearoa. It is a time to celebrate and honour the Māori New Year, marking the arrival of the Matariki star cluster in the winter sky. By celebrating Matariki, we embrace the rich traditions and wisdom of the Māori people, fostering a sense of unity, respect, and appreciation for our diverse society. All week long our school has been experiencing events and activities helping us to learn about whanaungatanga (family/belonging), manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship). This encourages us to reflect on the past, set goals for the future, and cherish the connections we have with nature and one another.
Our senior students are also looking at astronomy and staying overnight at the Observatory this week - this has been a real adventure.
We have had one of our parents, Josh, sharing indigenous Māori instruments with our students and guiding them to make Purerehua.
As we head into the term break, I want to wish you and your students a relaxing break - the kids are pretty tired at the moment.
We are looking forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday 17 July.
Nga mihi nui,
Michael Harrop
Principal
