This program is designed to engage and challenge students by encouraging them to conquer our five Ō Tātou Taonga through various learning experiences each with a values focus. This empowering initiative allows students to follow their passions and take ownership of their learning journey by enabling them to explore and pursue their unique interests and talents.
Through the 5 Peaks program, students are supported to identify their passions and set personal goals. They are given the freedom to choose their own learning pathways and engage in projects and activities that align with their interests. The program fosters a sense of ownership by empowering students to take responsibility for their learning. They are required to plan and organize their projects, set milestones, and track their progress through a targeted learning process. This approach cultivates self-motivation, self-discipline, and a strong sense of accountability. The 5 Peaks program provides a supportive and inclusive environment where students are supported to take risks, embrace challenges, and learn from both successes and failures. It promotes a growth mindset, instilling in students the belief that their abilities can be developed through effort and perseverance.
The skills and values instilled through the 5 Peaks program seamlessly prepare students for the transition to high school. As they progress through this empowering initiative the following essential traits are developed such as self-motivation, accountability, and a growth mindset. These qualities lay a solid foundation for their future endeavors, enabling them to adapt to the rigors and demands of high school academics and extracurricular activities. The program's emphasis on identifying passions and setting personal goals equips students with the tools they need to navigate the diverse offerings of high school. By encouraging them to explore and pursue their unique interests and talents, the 5 Peaks program fosters a sense of purpose and direction, helping students make informed decisions when selecting courses and extracurricular activities in high school. The independent study skills and self-directed learning approaches are often required at high school and the experience gained through planning, organizing, and tracking progress in the 5 Peaks program translates into valuable skills that can be applied to high school assignments, projects, and long-term goals.
By following their passions and taking ownership of their learning, students in the 5 Peaks program experience a deeper level of engagement and fulfillment in their educational journey. They develop a strong sense of purpose and gain valuable skills that will benefit them not only academically but also in their personal lives.
Students are required to complete five tasks under each of the values. When each of the five activities have been signed off by a member of the Student Council, a Ruru teacher and the Principal they will be awarded a badge for that value. When all five badges have been earned a kete badge will be awarded.
