Te Koromiko Swannanoa School Education Outside of the Classroom Overview
Te Koromiko Swannanoa School students are very active and enjoy competing in organised sports. Throughout the school year, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports thanks to the time parents and teachers put into coaching and managing teams.
We appreciate their efforts to enable such a high level of participation for all students. We are always on the lookout for new coaches and managers. If you are interested in helping out, please contact our sports coordinator through the school office - admin@swannnaoa.school.nz. Students who represent the school wear a sports uniform. This uniform has been worn by students since Term 4 2015.

Athletics
Athletics is a summer sport and students compete in Term 4 in the School’s Athletics Championships held at Te Koromiko Swannanoa School.
Te Koromiko Swannanoa School Junior Athletics (Yr 0-4) and Senior Athletics (Yr 5-8) are held every year in Term 4. It's a great day, and a chance for the tamariki to show off their athletics skills. Parents are encouraged to come along and support them.
Tamariki in Years 5 and upwards who qualify, will then go on to compete on behalf of our kura at the Pegasus Zones Athletics event, and those who are successful there will go on to compete at the Canterbury Zones.
Tamariki may compete in their house colours at the school events. Tamariki will get daily PE sessions carried out by their classroom kaiako leading into athletics. For further training, tamariki will need to undertake their own personal training.
The kura activity top and jacket will be provided for the Zone or Canterbury events.

Basketball
The Friday night basketball season runs in Term 1, 3 & 4 each year. The school caters for all years 5 & 6 and 7 & 8.
The Term 1 season is a round-robin competition, with the intention of allowing tamariki to try basketball, and for coaches, to assess the abilities/development of the players in advance of preparing for the competition at the end of the year. At Te Koromiko Swannanoa School, tamariki are catered for both competitive and non-competitive tamariki as we put the needs of our tamariki at the forefront of what we do. This enables us to provide opportunities for our tamariki to extend their sporting success at every point of their journey.
This will see all tamariki trialling for teams in Terms 1 and 3. Term 1 and Terms 3/4 competitions are separate - some may choose to enter Term 1, but not Term 3/4, for example.

Cross Country
Cross Country is a winter sport and students compete in Term 2 in the School’s Athletics Championships held at Te Koromiko Swannanoa School. Tamariki in Years 5 and upwards who get a certain time, will then go on to compete on behalf of our kura at the Eyre Cluster Zones at Cust. Top 6 place getters will compete at the Pegasus Zones Athletics event, and those who are successful there will go on to compete at the Canterbury Zones.
Te Koromiko Swannanoa School Junior Cross Country (Yr 0-4) and Senior Cross Country (Yr 5-8) are held every year in Term 2. Tamariki practice in the weeks leading up to the event, and by the time the race comes around they are ready to go!
The races are run in Year groups, with boys and girls running separately. Our race day course is around the kura grounds. Tamariki may compete in their house colours at the school events. Please ensure that your child has footwear and clothing suitable for sports, sunscreen, sun hat and plenty of water for the day. Certificates are given out to children who place 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Certificates will also be given to children who display our Te Koromiko Swannanoa School values.
The school activity top and jacket will be provided for the Zone or Canterbury events.
Tamariki will get daily PE sessions carried out by their classroom kaiako leading into cross country. For further training, tamariki will need to undertake their own personal training.

Swimming Sports
Swimming is a summer sport and tamariki compete in term one in the Non-Championship or Championship held at Dudley Pool.
Every year we hold our school swimming sports in Term 1. Tamariki in Years 5 and upwards who qualify in the Championship event, will then go on to compete on behalf of our kura school at the Pegasus Zones Athletics event, and those who are successful there will go on to compete at the Canterbury Zones.
Having said that, we feel it is important that all tamariki have the chance to compete and test themselves in a competitive event. With this in mind, our swimming sports also include a Non- Championship event with both the smaller 15m and the 25m pool being used. The races in the 15m pool are for swimmers that are not confident.
The kura activity top and jacket will be provided for the Zone or Canterbury events.

Each team must have an umpire and manager, parents can do both.

Wai Swim
WaiSwim is a registered Quality Swim School with Swimming New Zealand. The focus of the programme is to provide tamariki with a strong foundation of balance and body positioning in the water and then build on these skills. Learning to swim is a life skill and takes time.
We are all too well aware of drowning statistics in New Zealand and although we take lessons at our kura pool we can be disadvantaged because of weather, the number of classes and the temperature of the water.
In Terms 2 or 3 our yr 0-6 classes go to Dudley pool for our swimming programme. The Wai Swim programme is where tamariki can have 10 lessons at the heated Dudley Pool, Rangiora, taken by qualified swimming instructors.
Buses are provided free to and from the venue and the cost of swimming instructions per student is only $15 in total ($1.50 per lesson).

Koru Games
The Koru Games was set up to provide South Island year 7 & 8 tamariki with an accessible opportunity to develop their individual skillsets through playing team sport for their kura.
All sports offered will be played simultaneously over the three days of the Games (Boccia is the only exception and is only played on Tuesday), making the best use of the available time and space. All sports are split across 4x hubs in Selwyn; Lincoln, Rolleston, Lincoln University and Prebbleton.
The sports included are Badminton, Basketball, Boccia (for physically impaired athletes), Football (soccer), Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Table Tennis, Tennis, Touch and Volleyball. All sports are hosted at Selwyn District venues.
Parents are needed to be available for transport for some of the days. Each team must have a manager. Tamariki will be issued with a uniform and will require the appropriate gear for their chosen sport. Teams that are already playing at the Winter Tournament can be entered. If there are any new teams required for other sports, there will be trials if needed. An example could be 3x3 basketball.
