Tēnā koutou katoa I have recently attended the national Presbyterian Schools’ conference held at Scots’ College in Wellington. This annual gathering of representatives from our 12 schools is always a valued opportunity to connect with colleagues and reflect on our Presbyterian special character

Columba College recently travelled to Christchurch attend the annual school exchange between Columba, Craighead, St Hilda’s and St. Margaret’s in badminton, debating, hockey and netball.  

The Board of Trustees has spent time this year establishing a robust sub-committee structure ensuring governance of key policies such as health and safety and curriculum.

On Monday 7 August, the Columba College ski racing teams competed in the Otago Southland Secondary School Ski & Snowboard Competition at Cardrona.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for the launch of the Columba College Foundation. The Marsh Sports Centre underwent quite a transformation and we had a great evening dining with the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Bill English and Hon. Michael Woodhouse.  

On Tuesday 7 August, Columba had six runners compete in the Ariki Cup.

After the wet weather, we finally managed to hold our Junior School Cross Country Year 4-6 Races on Friday afternoon.  All of the children ran to the best of their abilities. 

Brenna Lyons, Amelia Loudon and Ryan Dailey represented Otago at the U13 pre-qualifying tournament in Gore on 5-6 August.

Here are some photographs of the Maori Art Exhibition in the He Aho Tahuhu Gallery. This was a wonderful selection of finished artworks from Year 7 to 10. The artworks ranged from drawings, printmaking paintings and sculptures. 

The ‘Healthy Harbour’ watch programme sees a group of students from several Dunedin schools monitoring the Otago Harbour and analysing samples collected from it. 

Congratulations to Corrie Anderson, who won the Aurora Energy Otago Science and Technology Fair. 

On Tuesday 25 July, Columba had four teams competing in the EPro8 Challenge – an interschool Science and Technology competition. 

The Mathematics department is thrilled to congratulate the following high achieving students in the University of Canterbury Kiwi Mathematics Competition. This competition was an on-line Mathematics competition that required a high degree of problem solving skills.

Our students have been achieving highly in English. Here are the latest accolades:

Several students in Ms. Lindsay’s Year 9 Drama class wrote original scripts that were premiered on Tuesday 1 August. ‘The Death Plan’, written by Laura Canton, and ‘Daily News Channel 2000’ by Aidan Forbes were the two plays that were chosen to be showcased.

Year 12 student Molly Crighton has won the senior section of the 2017 WriteNow Poetry Competition for Dunedin secondary school students.

Congratulations to Ella Calder, Abby Bowmar and Sophie Baron who have been awarded second place in the NZTA future tech competition. This is two years in a row for Columba Digital Technology! Check out their video below!

Columba College would like to introduce Mr Christopher Hawtin and Mr Taylor Quirk, the student teachers who will be at Columba over the duration of Term 3. Both are studying on the Masters in Teaching programme at Otago University. 

Three year 9 students from Dunedin’s Columba College have launched a new mobile app aimed at helping tackle obesity.
