Year 9 Parliament Visits

This week we took eight of our Year 9 History in Aotearoa classes to Parliament.
    by Lucinda Lendrum

The focus of these trips was to give our students an understanding of how New Zealand's government works, and the democratic process. This aligns with a unit that we will be exploring later on in the year on different types of governments. The trip also complements the Aotearoa Histories Curriculum looking at the role that power and legislation has played in our nation's history.

Students took part in a one hour tour in which they learned about the debating chamber, how laws are made, the role of the press and opposition, and select committees. The remaining classes will visit Parliament next week.
