Vaping consequences

Update to school procedures
    by Lucinda Lendrum

Many thanks for your continued support with the nationwide focus of stopping our rangatahi vaping throughout New Zealand. It's important that at Wellington College we make sure that our kura is a vape free zone and we will continue to educate our boys on the harms and negative impact that vaping has. We have stressed to boys that it is illegal for anyone to sell or give vaping product to anyone under 18. Vaping is prohibited on school property or grounds. All schools have similar rules around tobacco, alcohol and drugs. Thank you all for your continued support and vigilance around eliminating vaping from our boys' lives.

As you know there are consequences to being caught vaping, or in possession of vapes. We want to inform you of the consequences if your son is caught vaping, in the possession of vapes or in the company of vapers. These may include the use of stand-downs along with community service and behavioural catch up times (B-CUTs).

Vaping is something that none of us were prepared for coming out of teachers college. For us it takes time away from spending quality time with our boys in curriculum and co-curricular activities. But more importantly it steals the health and well being of our rangatahi. Together in partnership, at school and at home we can stop this. Schools around Aotearoa stand ready to do all we can to stop our young people from vaping. If it's educating them on the effects and that stops them then that's great. If it's punitive measures that stops them then that's what needs to be done. We must all make a stand together and support each other to bring vaping to an end.
