God's Creation

Senior School Environmental Council
    by KingsWay School

This term, the Senior School Environmental Council has focused on a pest control project which aims to eradicate rats around the perimeter of Kingsway School’s Senior Campus, including a section of the estuary walkway surroundings. This is an important initiative as rats can cause devastating consequences to the natural environment, eating the fruit and seeds of a number of endemic plants that are a common food source for native birds that make their home around the area. Additionally, these rats bring diseases to humans and plants alike and have also been known to feed on small ground-nesting birds, which further adds to the decline of our precious surrounding bird life. Overall, we hope that our efforts to reduce and eliminate the rat population around our beautiful school will greatly improve, ensuring that our natural environment flourishes as we prioritise the safety and well-being of our important native birds.

The council also organised ‘The Bin Shot Challenge’ event this term, which was held during lunchtime on Wednesday 6 July. This challenge involved Middle School as well as Senior School students competing in multiple rounds of games focused on who could shoot the greatest number of plastic litter items, such as cans, bottles and other ‘throw-able’ objects previously collected around the school, into the rubbish bins set up in the Youngman Arena. There were two games going at once, and each of the two competitors in each round were given one minute to complete the task. Don’t worry, they had rubber gloves on! Altogether, there were ten rounds with several prizes given out to the competitors. Everyone had a great time, and the player with the highest-ranking score at the end of the tournament won a prize!

Our aim in hosting this great Bin Shot Challenge was to make throwing litter away a fun, competitive activity where everyone could join in and be encouraged to do their part in keeping our school beautiful and clean.
