I am sure most parents would agree that play is vital for children's development. However, typically learning is seen as separate from play. The primary focus is on developing children's literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge building in science, the arts, technology etc. Learning within these areas is more formal (think: sitting down, writing, completing tasks, puzzles, problems, or activities set by the teacher). For many adults, this is what learning looks and sounds like.

Last week was Māori Language Week. This special week is an opportunity to celebrate and promote the everyday use of te reo Māori at home, school or work. A great exercise to practice this, is to create your own pepeha.

With a few weeks of Home Learning notched up we would like to hear how it is all going.

During lockdown Rm13 focused on activities all around the life of a pirate!

In our third week of Home Learning, our focus is on providing quality teaching and learning, a continuation of classwork and as much as possible, providing a semblance of routine and order. We are only too aware of the impact that lockdown may have on our children's progress and achievement, but research shows that we should remain optimistic.

Hello my name is Abigail Wiggins, and I am currently in Wanaka for the winter season.

This terms inquiry into the Arts aims to spark curiosity and wonder. Through carefully planned learning experiences, we encourage children to make connections and use their creative skills to express themselves. It is a perfect example of a holistic approach to education. Something we do every day but rarely put a name to.

As the winter rolls in and there doesnt seem like much for our students to do at lunchtimes, we are offering plenty of activities across the school.

To ignite this term's art inquiry Stanley Bay School had an Express Yourself Day!

Last year we introduced the Knowledgeathon as a fundraiser for the school. It proved so popular with the children that we will be running it again this term.

On Friday last week Ropu Kakano had an exciting trip to the Bruce Mason Theatre in Takapuna to watch the Wonderland Glow Show.

This term our two learning teams, Rōpū Kākano (Years 0-2) and Rōpū Māhuri (Years 3-6), have a focus on The Arts as the integral theme of their learning.

On Saturday the 7th of August, St Joseph’s School on the North Shore hosted a grading for Kensinshekan Karate-do where Zara M Rm 8 and Juliette M Rm 6, Alex H Rm 9 and Zach H Rm 6 were graded.

With curiosity and wonder, we will be exploring The Arts to find out how we can use art forms to express ourselves!

This term our annual book fair and book week will be held from Monday 6th September until Friday 10th September.

On the 3rd of July the Stanley Bay kapa haka group performed at the Bayswater Matariki Festival.

Our Juniors are loving being back at school and have settled into Term 3, engaged and ready to learn.
