Maths Meets Nutrition - Korimako (Year 5-6)
Sheradyn Limmer - February 25, 2025
As part of our Numeracy learning this term, we have been exploring nutrition through a mathematical lens.
Over the past couple of weeks, students have applied their addition and subtraction skills to weigh food items and analyse nutritional information from packaging.
By calculating the weight of different foods and comparing levels of sugar, sodium, and other nutrients, tamariki have deepened their understanding of both maths and healthy eating. Our tamariki have been actively engaged in learning how to weigh different foods while exploring various metric measurement systems. They have worked cooperatively within mixed ability small groups, using the Marshland Mana value of Ngatahi to solve a variety of maths problems.
Hands-on activities such as estimating and weighing produce have sparked engaging discussions, especially when students discovered just how much sugar, sodium, or energy is in some of their favourite foods!
This practical approach has strengthened their maths skills while reinforcing valuable lessons about nutrition and making informed food choices.
