Dear parents and caregivers,

Our annual Winter Festival was held on the last day of term two. The calendar favourite saw a range of year levels and teaching staff participate in three different events across our school grounds.

This week we talk to Danish-born acting head of science and science and biology teacher Gerd Banke.

Just before the end of last term, Nayland College teams competed in the Tasman Secondary Schools Table Tennis Championship.

Nayland Under 15 Tasman representative girls basketballers Tavie Geddes, Cooper Phipps and Pene Taulafo played at the national tournament in Tauranga during the July school break.

Nelson City Brass Band came home victorious after placing first in the B grade at the annual NZ Brass Band Championship in Hamilton during the first week of the winter holidays.

The Innovative Young Minds programme was an opportunity for year 11 and 12 girls, such as myself, to spend a week in Wellington to be able to explore and experience what careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) can be like.

Nayland students Emma Cottom, Uma Vij and Brooke Gabb competed for their FC Nelson Football Club at the Alan Fraser Memorial Tournament over the July holidays.

Maths is the music of reason! Young mathematicians from the Nelson/Tasman region gathered in the Nayland College hall for the 20th edition of Nelsomathix on Wednesday 26 June.

During the term two school holidays, the 9A netball team competed in the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament, held at Hagley Park in Christchurch.

On July 31st a combined Nayland group of NEST members, level 1 primary industries students and year 10 horticulture students took part in a sea grass planting initiative.

Four Nayland College students are a part the Under 14 Nelson Suburbs Colts team that recently won the Christchurch International Cup tournament in July.

The ‘Junior Stretch and Challenge’ day is tailored to extend students in Years 7-10.

Are you under 25 years old and have any experience or interest in a government role (board or committee), or a leadership role within your community or school? We are looking for your opinion to co-design a fun and informative training to help young people embark on these roles.

The Nelson Half is into its third year of the ‘giving back to schools’ programme and it would be great to spread the word throughout the community.

Our mums' community sports league will start in September and teams are continuing to form in Term 3, from July 22nd.
