On Tuesday 25 May Tauranga Girls’ College entered three teams of Year 9 and 10 students in the EPro8 Engineering Challenge heats, held at Tauranga Boys’ College.

Our combined Year 12-13 Film & Media Production class were invited to attend the Censor for a Day workshop held by the NZ Classifications Office at Event Cinema.

On 19 May, a group of Year 1 students from Gate Pā Primary School spent a fun-filled afternoon crafting and learning, in an event held by the Arts and International Committees called Pukehinahina in the Park. Our girls came up with this event as a new take on the traditional TGC event 'The Teddy Bear’s Picnic', with the goal of being more diverse and inclusive.

This protocol outlines what a group needs to discuss, agree and record to safely pull together information about children and young people’s learning support needs.

In our Year 9 Science class, we learned about lunar phases and lunar eclipse. On 26 May, we used cameras to record the blood supermoon.

The Pasifika program is off to a great start this year with the continuation of the Homo Haia homework club and Rising Hibiscus early morning program. There has been a great turn out for each of these weekly events, with a good mix of students from both Tauranga Girls’ College and Tauranga Boys’ College.

Musicianship students were treated to an inspiring workshop with Joel Shadbolt from one of our top NZ bands, LAB. Joel calls the Bay of Plenty home and enjoys working with and encouraging students.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE PERFORMING ARTS: In the Arts curriculum, flexible student-centred learning embraces the four Cs of 21st Century Learning (collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking). This enables our students opportunities to explore, challenge and innovate so they may thrive now and move forward with confidence.

On Tuesday 11 May, we finally got to play our TGC Senior tennis championship.

On Friday 28 May 16 young athletes from Tauranga Girls’ College proudly represented the kura at the iSPORT ‘Connecting to Character’ Youth Leadership Day.

On 13 May, a group of 40 students accompanied by teachers, Carina Rumney and Laura McIntosh, and librarian Rosemary Middleton, travelled to the Auckland Writers Festival. Here is Year 11 student, Kell Crother’s account of the day.

The 2021 Aquatics class have recently been involved in working towards their PADI Open Water Dive Certification.

On Friday 21 May the four TGC Junior Competitive Badminton Teams competed in the Western Bay of Plenty Championships.

Junior Band 'Ällegro' had their debut performance at the recent Rockquest.

Each Tuesday the 9DTM class time is dedicated to investigating issues, awareness and solutions around real world problems.

Ella Rose McOnie competed in the championships and placed 2nd in the age 15-16 women’s trampoline and has qualified for the Nationals in July in both trampoline and Double-Mini. Congratulations Ella Rose, great result.

Our three Dance troupes took to the stage for the first competition of the year on 15 May holding their own against strong studio dance troupes.

Congratulations to the following five students who represented Tauranga Girls’ College at the Rhythmic Gymnastics competition in Auckland on 30 May: Ashley York, Sunny Davis, Brooke Watkins, Kyra O'Dwyer and Nina Chernova.

11 teams headed to Taupo to take on Napier Girls' High School (NGHS) on Thursday 20 May.

On Friday 28 May we had eight girls competing in this competition.

Ariana Braid, Year 10, Kendall Robson, Year 9, Pippa Cronin, Year 9 and Pippa Montgomerie,Year 9 competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Artistic Gymnastic Competition during May.

On Monday 17 May TGC athletes competed at the BOP Cross Country Champs held at Waipuna Park.

Tauranga Girls’ College Alumni Taylor Devonport (2016-2020) is pursuing her dream of becoming a librarian. Having realised her passion for literature from a young age, Taylor spent her time at Tauranga Girls’ College working as a student librarian in preparation to study for her dream job.
