Rose Planting for Mrs MossmanOur ‘Penelope’ roses arrived and have now found a home in the garden in front of the Academy where Penny spent so much of her time. Thanks to the group of senior students who came along on Tuesday to plant them and to Tony and Eve for clearing the garden out and making it look great.
School Interview Bookings These will open on Friday 4th June so look out for the link coming your way by APP, email or on Facebook. This year you will have the option to attend by ZOOM or in person, so please follow the booking instructions very carefully to make sure you get the option you want.
CANDO CardsStudents can now get an offcial student ID CANDO card through the school office for $10.00. This card will entitle students to discounts and can also be used as a metrocard for public transport in Christschurch if required. This initiative was instigated by our Student Executive this year.
Duke of Edinburgh Award (also known as the Young New Zealanders Challenge) Mr Black is coordinating this programme this year alongside the Children’s University with a hardy group of students completing their Bronze award over the course of the year. Part of this award is a service component whereby the individual has to give one hour a week to serve the community. This picture is of Celine and Grace who have opted to help out at the local St John each friday cleaning the ambulance and just about anything else that needs to be done.
A note on UniformsIt is very cold in the mornings and we are noticing a few of our senior students coming to school less than prepared for the conditions, some resembling icicles. Students are able to wear plain black or white thermals under their shirts and we have beanies, scarves and jackets available from the office. We also have some secondhand jackets at bargain prices and school sweaters that are super warm. As we move into the colder months, now is a good time to do a uniform stock take at home and ensure your child has all they need to stay warm.
Have a great weekend. Early morning sport is looking good but less than hopeful for a nice afternoon!

Junior School News
Kia ora Parents and Whanau
This week our Year 7/8 debating team travelled to Ashgrove School to debate “Schools don’t need libraries.” Although the team of Zara Hamilton, Issy Williamson, Sophie Drummond and Valerie Croft debated strongly on the negative side of the moot, they lost by 20 points. This team should be very proud of their first effort and also of their bravery. We know that most people will avoid public speaking if they can. Well done girls!
It is almost June 1st and ‘Gypsy Day’ and this may mean there will be some disruption to classes with children leaving the school as well as those arriving. If you are employing new staff, please ask them to contact the school as soon as possible to let us know they are coming. This helps us to be prepared and plan for bigger numbers that may arrive.
We are beginning to enrol new students into the primary school, as is normal at this time of year. We have also said goodbye to a few long standing Amurians. Year 7/8 have sadly farewelled Nick and Noah this week and last week we farewelled Hashley and Hailey. We have welcomed Ozy in Room 1 with Mrs Johnson. There will be more new students in our next newsletter as we have three new entrants visiting currently who will join us soon.
Other wee snippets of things happening…Room 6 and Ms Campbell are away in Christchurch today learning about Jean Batten. Room 4 have welcomed Mrs Jen Brett officially. Although Jen has been working voluntarily in Room 4, this week saw the start of her official teacher training placement. Welcome Jen!
Tekoa students have been making the most of their Lexia licences and there are progress certificates being printed every week which is pleasing to see. For those of you are who aren’t familiar with Lexia, this is an online alphabet, phonics and spelling program that we use with all our Year 1-6 students. These students will be able to use their logins at school and at home. There have been some updates to the program which now has more levels to complete so all students will be involved during the year. We encourage parents to allow children some time at home to work on this, within the family rules that you have around using devices.
It was fantastic to see so many parents and whanau here at our cross country last week. The support for your children is always greatly appreciated and it’s amazing to see how fast children can speed up to for the big finish. There’s something about an encouraging comment from family and it’s always lovely to see the smiles of achievement when the line is crossed!
In June we have two visiting performances. Next week on June 1st , we are hosting ‘Be Bright, Eat Right.’ This is for all Year 1-8 students and the cost for this will be kindly covered by the PTA with our grateful thanks. The second performance is El Gregoe, a well-known magician. He is visiting on June 21st with his show ‘What you can be.’ This is specifically for Year 1-6 students.
The lost property box is overflowing on the primary side. There are a number of lunchboxes and drink bottles and a few items of clothing. Please pop in and have a look and remember to name all uniform items as it is very hard to return things that aren’t named.
