It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the last term of the year. A reminder that we finish on Tuesday 13th December with the annual prize-giving ceremony.
I was reflecting this week on the fantastic win by the Black Ferns in the Rugby World Cup final last Saturday night. During the game I’ll admit being worried that we would not be able to overcome the English team and their clinical forward’s play. What stuck out to me was the self-belief and willingness to try different tactics that was shown by the Black Ferns. This was a wonderful example for our tamariki in having a positive attitude and growth mindset, even in the face of adversity. It was lovely to see so many students dressed in black on Thursday to celebrate the amazing achievement!
Staff will be attending a range of professional development opportunities on the upcoming Ministry Accord days (Teacher Only Days) on the 25th and 28th November. A reminder that school is closed for instruction on both of these days.
You may also have heard that members of the NZEI and PPTA unions will be holding paid union meetings in the coming weeks. School remains open for instruction during these meetings with students supervised by other staff during these times.
Staff have been preparing reports and these will be coming home in between the 7th-9th December. A survey regarding reports has been sent home and we would appreciate you completing this.
All the best to those participating in the annual trail ride this Saturday and I would like to extend my thanks to the course planners, PTA and volunteers. This is a great fund-raiser for the school!

After some very hot weather over the last week, the swimming pool has finally been cleaned ready for swimming. Please ask your children to remember to bring their named swimming togs, towels and goggles ready for swimming for the remainder of the term.
The summer term is always busy with reports and sports and this term has been no exception. We have had our own athletics, both junior and senior and then the Hurunui Zone athletics last Monday. Thank you to Miss Sopp for her work organising this zone competition on our behalf. It was a perfect day weather wise for all our visiting competitors. From the zone competition we had many students who have qualified for the CPS Athletics and students have been notified of their qualification this week.
Miss Sopp accompanied a group of our Tapuae-o-Uenuku students to primary school cricket at Mandeville on Wednesday. The teams had a mixture of wins and losses but all had a great day playing against other North Canterbury schools. It was great to see our Saturday cricket players taking the lead and encouraging those who have had less cricket experience. Well done to everyone for a positive experience.
On Wednesday I was part of the judging panel for the Primary Year 5/6 Speech Cup. Mrs Steel, Mrs Nimmo and I were all very impressed with both the quality of the content of the speeches and the quality of the delivery. The students were very well rehearsed and thank you to Terako teachers Mrs Moke, Miss Paterson and Miss Garthwaite for preparing the students to that level. Molly Schuurman won the cup with her speech about ‘Pets’, second was James Van Arendonk with his speech on ‘MineCraft’ and third was Tom Black on ‘Pig Hunting’. Congratulations to all the students who took part in the finals.

Year 9 students moving into Year 10 in 2023
In preparation for a successful 2023 academic year, we have recalibrated the classes to reflect a balance in personalities, academic ability, drive for success, while creating opportunities for students to grow their friendship groups. Students have been informed of the core classes that they will be in. Communication with parents will be coming out in the next week.
NZQA external exams continuing
These are all going well under the watchful eye and organization thanks to Janet Moriarty. Just a reminder to students with exams still to come, arrive at least 10 minutes before exams start with your exam entrance slip.
Impact of Covid is still rampant in our community with another wave of illnesses prohibiting students from sitting their exams. We have a contingency in place for this and our derived grade exams will come into play. Please contact Mrs Peterson if you need support to access this.
Year 10 moving into NCEA Level 1
The timetable for 2023 is now published. Please make contact with your subject teachers for 2023 to have a discussion around what the learning programme will look like for next year and if there is any preparation you could be doing to start the year well.
In 2023 we are excited to be expanding our repertoire of subjects on offer to our senior students to include Soft Materials Product Design (fashion & furniture upcycling) and Spatial Design (interior design and architecture). To help us expand students access to the commercial world, we are requesting support through the donation of magazines specifically in these fields (Fashion, Interior design, architecture, design and lifestyle). If you have magazines spare from 2000 onwards, please send them to the school office or to Mrs Peterson direct, thank you.
