Newsletter - WE 20/08/21

An interesting week to say the least. I am writing this as I imagine many of you are in anticipation of the 3pm announcement today to have some indication of what is to come next week. I would like to thank the staff here at Amuri for mobilising so quickly to deliver online learning. I am, as ever, very proud to be part of this team. It is too early to speculate what may come and as soon as we have something concrete, we will let you all know what is happening from a school perspective. Our Management Team have been meeting over the past two days to plan for each possible outcome so we are as ready as we can be under the circumstances.
I know for many families in the midst of calving this could not have come at a worse time and appreciate the efforts being made to engage your children with the learning content. I have just had the pleasure of browsing through the Seesaw work in Year 1-8 and I am impressed by the work delivered. I know the seniors are hard at work accessing their work through ONE NOTE or Wordpress. Initial reports from teachers indicate high attendance at Zoom sessions which is also great to see so early on. I would like to once again thank Kelly and Andrew from the local Culverden 4Square for supporting our device roll out in the last two days.
We are already seeing a raft of cancellations coming in and I am sad to see the Barbarians rugby postponed and awaiting an outcome on the SISS netball the week after next. We will make a decision on our Wearable Arts event on Monday. We are still intending for senior course selection to be completed by the end of next week and we have created a system to manage both the mentoring and selection process regardless of the alert level.
That's all for now as so much is uncertain, however, we will communicate through all our channels as soon as we know what is happening and if you are unsure, please do not hesitate to email one of our management team.

The last fortnight has seen some big events for the students in Year 1-8.
Last Friday was the end of Amuri Maths Week and we had a huge number of entries from within our school and also from other primary schools in the Hurunui. Charlie, George and Caleb from Room 5 designed and built their own marble run using their knowledge of acute, right and obtuse angles and were proud of their finished run. Room 3 had some stunning symmetrical shape artwork entries. There were too many to show here and I know that Janine was busy with her camera at the exhibition. Look out for more photos in the Amurian at the end of the year. Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Ibbotson do an amazing job of organising this event and co ordinating and involving many primary schools in the area. Wawanei!
Last Friday was also our Jump Jam for StarJam participation. The children in Year 1-6 raised $120.10 for the StarJam cause. We had great fun performing four songs and then were lucky enough to see our Jump Jam group and Miss Sopp perform a new song for us. Thanks to Miss Sopp for organising this event for our learners. It was a fun way to end the school week.
The postponed ski trip for Years 5-8 was a shame but absolutely the right call in the end. The forecasted gales arrived as expected in the afternoon, meaning we are looking for a postponement date and this will be sent out as soon as we have it.
We have 8 lunch boxes and three drink bottles that have been left at school over the last few weeks. They have all had a ride through the dishwasher to remove all the ‘experiments’ that were in them and are now all clean and waiting for their owners to claim them. Janine also has some clothing in the school office from the primary side. Please come and look to see if there is something that belongs to your family.
