Newsletter - WE 25/06/21
National Volunteer WeekOnce a year we take time to thank the people who volunteer their time in and across our community in a multitude of ways. I have often used this forum to thank our local coaches and managers for the various sporting codes within our clubs without which our students would not have these opportunities. We also have volunteers within our school coaching teams, driving students to games, helping with camps and activities and in classes working to improve our readers.
This week we also thank our local fire and St John teams based in Culverden, Hanmer and Waiau and the various response committees and societies where people give their time to make things just a little better for everyone else. I encourage you to find a way to contribute however small it may be, as every little bit really does help.
Peter Pan Thanks to you all for coming along! The three shows were very well attended which is so important for the students to have the feel of a packed house! What a great performance and we are so proud of you all!
Congratulations Well done to Angie Mones-Cazon for a top 10 finish in the recent Canterbury Cross Country event. This is from a field of hundreds so quite an achievement. Also to Bob Thompson who competed for Amuri at the South Island Secondary School champs achieving no less than THREE personal bests on the day.
Next Week
A VERY busy week with the Matariki performance and dinner on Monday and our Childrens University participants heading away to visit a real university also on Monday. Our Senior chemists also head away on Thursday for a field trip. The senior formal will be in Hanmer Springs on Friday night and huge thanks to our wonderful Head Students Hannah and Celine for pulling this together.
Student Interview Bookings These will close on THURSDSAY 1st July so please make your bookings by then. Please call the office if you are having any difficulties using the online system and we will book them for you whilst you are on the phone.
Sniffles and GastrobugThere are some rather nasty bugs floating around Christchurch schools right now and they will inevitably head North sooner or later. Please watch out in particular for tummy aches as the gastrobug in circulation is very contagious.
That said, have a great weekend.

Primary School News
Kia ora Parents and WhanauYear 1-6 started their week with a visit from Elgregoe the magician with his show ‘What you can be.’ This show was all about having the power to manage unwanted behaviours and bullying. Along with his message of ‘Cool kids care’, the students and staff were wowed by the amazing magical illusions. Not to mention the nine birds who accompanied him including his new bird, Richie The Macaw
.Dylan Brogden and Gus Clisby are our newest Amurians, They started school last week with Mrs Johnson in Room 1. Welcome Dylan and Gus!
Room 7 is now underway and our Year 3 students and Miss Dryden have settled into their routines. The addition of this new classroom was due to roll growth in the Year 3 and 4 area where numbers have grown considerably since the start of the year.
We have many tired students this week after last weeks production and there are numerous students away with illnesses. If in doubt, please keep your child at home. Now that the weather is grey and damp, it’s best to err on the side of caution to avoid spreading the bugs to other students and staff.
A huge congratulations to all our students and staff who were involved in ‘Peter Pan’. It was an amazing show and it was fantastic to see so many members of our community supporting the cast and crew. We hope you all enjoyed the show!

It's that time of year..As we all rush round in the morning, heading to sports, checking the bag for the mouthguard, shoes and.....inhalers, we all know the feeling. We know there are heaps in the house, but where are they when you need them? It's really important to only use them when they are prescribed for you by a Doctor. And given the spread of germs, its best not to share. Ensure that you check their expiry date also, as this can make the medication ineffective.Keep the cap on your inhaler to avoid sudden inhalation of debri from inside your bag too!So work out who needs their asthma checked by your GP, make an appointment and head along and refresh the inhaler supply for these cooler months, remembering also that if you find yourself using your blue inhaler more than twice a week it may mean that your asthma is not in control, and you may need a preventer inhaler added. For more information on asthma, head along to your local GP or Nurse for a chat.A good time too, to touch base with the school and update your child's medical records if they now need, or have since stopped needing an inhaler.Yours in Good HealthMischa
