Kia ora Koutou
Nau mai hoki mai ki te wāhanga tuarua – welcome back to Term 2!
I trust that you all had a safe and enjoyable holiday break. The mornings are becoming cooler and foggier as we progress towards winter. There is a lot to look forward to this term with the school production in full swing, winter sport kicking off and other school-based activities and trips all set to go.Our school value this term is EXCELLENCE. At our assembly last Wednesday, we talked about how society can project a view of what excellence is and when we compare our efforts or achievements to this view, we can feel that our efforts come up short. What we don’t always see is the circumstances or effort that sit behind something. Excellence might be getting 100% on a test but it is also passing that test when learning is challenging or difficult. We reviewed paintings of horses (see the newsletter), one was painted by a blind person, another by an artist with no arms who used their mouth and the third by a 7-year-old. All of the paintings, though looking generic or average at first glance, had to be considered excellent once we knew the circumstances behind them. Each of our students has the potential to be excellent. It is our desire to look for excellence in more than just the best of the best. I encourage you to have some conversations with your children about what excellence means to you as a whānau and how we can assist our tamariki to strive for excellence in all they do.
I have sent information to the community regarding industrial action proposed by teachers. Could you please take careful note of the dates that are involved and as requested, please let the school know the day before if you are intending to send your child/children to school to be supervised on the rostered days.
All the best for the term ahead.

Senior School News
Tēnā koe e hoa and welcome back to term 2.
Firstly, a special mention to those students that represented Amuri Area School during the Anzac day commemorations around the district. The school was represented in our local Rotherham memorial by some of our Senior Kaiarahi leaders from within the school. (Mateo Jamieson – Head Student, Myla Roberts and Sam Bush – Kaiarahi)
Uniform
A gentle reminder that tracksuit pants are not school uniform. They are listed as part of the sports uniform and not to be worn during the day in classes. Acknowledging that the weather is turning colder and students may not wish to wear shorts to school, there is an option for black dress pants to be worn and/or the school Kilt.
Careers information and planning:
It is coming up to that time again where students from Year 10 upwards make informed decisions around pathways, either to transition beyond school or internally within school through option selections for the following year.
To help them with their thinking, we have a range of activities/ events that are available.
Of course, the best support they can get is through discussion with their teachers, parents, community contacts and their friends.
Please have a look at the following events coming up:
* Otago University/ Polytechnic Open days - 7th and 8th May (There is already a trip scheduled to visit with senior students)
• Canterbury University Open Day – 8th September. (This is quite late for students wanting to enrol for next year. If this is the case, please send them to see me).
Other University open days that we will not be organising trips to but can work with students interested in attending:
Lincoln University Open Day 29th September
Massey University Wellington Open Day 25th August
ARA Open Day 8th June 3pm till 6pm
Dates to note:
• Residential Halls applications open on 1st August for February 2024 intake. All Universities use the same process for residential hall applications and as the spaces are in such high demand, the application date is earlier than University applications into programmes.
• University application open dates vary depending on the university, but generally open from September.
• BCITO Apprenticeship drop in lunch chat. Come and meet Lexi Keane, the BCITO Apprenticeship Co-ordinator for North Canterbury – 31st May from 1.20pm–2pm
• Christchurch Arena Careers Expo – 11th–13th May (we will not be organising a trip to this event as students can enrol in a virtual expo through this portal: https://online.careersexpo.org.nz/
• North Canterbury Careers Expo – 24th May at 5:00pm until 7.30pm (Students to complete permission slip and indicate if seats required on the bus. Hurunui District Council is helping with a bus from Amuri to Rangiora High School and back for approximately 8.30pm). Parents welcome to attend.
• NCEA information evening for Parents new to NCEA in 2023 and 2024 – End of Term 2. Date TBC at Amuri Area School.
• Student Option Selection – Information Assemblies – Term 3
Further to this, students can access support and guidance by meeting with Mrs Peterson.
• The library has a careers information kiosk that is a relevant and interesting pathway information tool. Well worth a look and some time spent trolling through different careers to look and see what is available.
• The school will be facilitating the 2-day Pro-Med Workplace Health and Safety and Drug Awareness programme in Term 3.
• Mrs Peterson will run CV writing workshops at the end of Term 2 and 3 during either lunchtime or period 5 on a Wednesday.
For a dose of Arts & Culture over the next few weeks in the month of May, the following students are displaying their NCEA visual arts portfolios at ACAC Hanmer Gallery. It is well worth viewing the excellent work that our students have produced in 2022.

Primary School News
Kia ora Parents and Whanau
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you all had a restful break.
We have had a number of enrolments to start in the first week of June. Things have been quiet during the covid years, but it seems there is more movement this year. If you are intending to move and will be leaving the area, please let us know. If you are employing new staff with school aged children, please encourage them to pre enrol their children so we can plan for their arrival.
Bible in Schools resumed last term. This half hour session is held on a Friday from 9-9:30am and is run by volunteers from our community. To join these sessions, you must opt your child into them by completing the form supplied with your enrolment form OR by emailing me at kylee@amuri.school.nz asking for your child to be involved. Children who are not opted into these sessions are taught a values-based program in this time.
Primary assemblies are on Fridays at 2.15pm in the Community Room. We have a slightly later start as the Community Room doubles as a canteen for secondary students, so we can’t get in there during lunchtimes to set up. Please note that there will be no assemblies during the school production and we have a full school assembly timetabled for Friday the 23rd of June.

1st May 2023
Dear Parents / Caregivers
REGARDING ALL YEAR 9 to 13 STUDENTS
The PPTA have confirmed this morning that Industrial Action will proceed where they will not teach students in different year levels on certain days, according to the table below.
Week 2 Thursday 4th May – Year 11
Week 3 Tuesday 9th May – Year 12
Thursday 11th May – Year 13
Week 4 Tuesday 16th May – Year 9
Wednesday 17th May – Year 10
Week 5 Thursday 25th May – Year 11
Week 6 Tuesday 30th May – Year 13
Thursday 1st June – Year 12
Week 7 Tuesday 6th June – Year 10
Thursday 8th – Year 9
The Board of Trustees has decided that students in affected year levels will have the option to come to school on the affected days. The school will provide a reliever to supervise any students who wish to come to school. The students will be working on revision, study, homework, or project work that has already been set. Lessons will not be provided for the relievers to teach. All other year levels will continue to be taught on these days according to their normal timetable.
If you are going to send your child to school on a day that it is optional, please email confirmation to the school office (office@amuri.school.nz) the day prior to assist us with planning on the affected days.
Please note that the school cross country is scheduled for this Thursday 4th May. If your child is in Year 11, they are welcome to attend the cross country – particularly if they were intending on running in a championship race.
Buses will not be affected as all other levels will continue as normal on the days listed.
We are yet to receive confirmation of a proposed one day regional strike on Tuesday 9th May; however, as soon as we have confirmation of this, we will communicate with the parent community.
Thank you for your patience and understanding on this matter.
Matt Barlow
Principal

Car parking by Dental Clinic
Just a reminder that when visiting the dental clinic, you are required to park out on the road, not down the bus driveway.
Thank you.
