Tena Koutou Katoa

A great start to the week for Year 6 camp in Kaikoura. Thanks to Ms Campbell for organising this for the students. Parent help is such a huge factor in allowing us to run these things so thank you to Sara Black, Carmen Cater and Jo McKenzie for giving up your precious time to help.

Last call for the Trail Ride this Sunday. The weather is looking good and we hope to see you all there for a great day of high-country trail riding.

As stated in last weeks newsletter, a reminder below on the dates for student achievement celebrations as we cannot have our usual prizegiving. These will be recorded and published on our Facebook page for you to watch.

• Year 11: Tuesday 7th December at 1pm straight after final Science exam in the community room.
• Year 12 and 13: 3.30pm on Monday 13th December in the Community Room.
• Year 1-10: Staggered throughout the morning on the 16th December with buses leaving at 1.15 on this day.

Year 10 camp head out on Monday to Windy Point. Thanks to Mr Cate for organising this trip.
Don’t forget next Thursday is the mandated NCEA teacher only day and school will be closed for instruction on this day.

Congratulations to Sophie Jones, Angie Mones-Cazon, Izzy Williamson, Hollie Scarlet, Gypsy Thornton and Lucy Whittleston for having their writing from the Young Writers School selected from over 700 entries to be published in the next edition of Write On 57: Believe It or Not. To have so many selected from just one school is quite an achievement so well done to you all. And to add to the success of our young writers of late, a huge congratulations to Lexi Godrey Grant for a third placing in the Hurunui Primary writing competition. Great work Lexi!

For parents who wish to come on site, please note, we ask that you only to come into the buildings if you must. If you do, scan in and wear a mask please. For those who wish to support school events by volunteering, proof of vaccination will be required. For parents of students who use our buses over the age of 12, make sure they have a mask each day for the ride in and home. We are on the home stretch to the end of the year and would love to get to the end without further disruption for students.

Have a lovely weekend.

Nga mihi nui.

Primary School News

Kia ora Parents and Whanau
This week we continue our success in the Literacy area with six students in Year 5-8 having their poems published. The Young Writer’s School were here last term and ran two workshops for two small groups of students. Their work was submitted for the Writer’s School publication ‘Write On” magazine. Congratulations to Sophie Jones, Angie Mones-Cazon, Issy Williamson, Hollie Scarlet, Gypsy Thornton and Lucy Whittleston for becoming published authors! Their published poems are included in this newsletter. We have also had our Junior Primary Speech Cup and congratulations to Lexie Godfrey Grant for winning the cup. Runner up was Lucy Whittleston and third was Gwen Manifold. The judges were very impressed with the standard of oral presentations as well as the delivery skills. Well done to all the participants as we all know how hard public speaking can be. We have also awarded Lexie Godfrey-Grant her third prize from the recent Hurunui Writing Caper competition at our virtual assembly this week. It is wonderful to see the success of our students in Writing and Oral Language.

Virtual primary assemblies are happening this term. A zoom link will be posted to your children’s class journal on Friday and by clicking the link you should be able to join, via a waiting room. Please make sure your microphone is on mute for the assembly. Thank you!

Year 6 have had a fabulous camp at Kaikōura with lots of beach activities and some sea kayaking. Camp is an opportunity for students to complete some learning outside the classroom and is an enormous amount of organising and paperwork. I know there have been times in the last few months when the staff had wondered if camp would ever go ahead, so we are all pleased that it has been able to happen. Thank you to Ms Campbell and her team of parent helpers who provided support for the camp. We hope you all enjoyed yourself and we are looking forward to seeing some photos and hearing some stories. Whilst they have been away, Year 5 and Mrs Moke have had some big days out. They visited Clip and Climb on Monday, Hanmer Springs Hot Pools on Tuesday and then on Wednesday they completed some activities at school before doing a crash course in first aid with Mr Griggs.

As it’s now Term 4, we need for all students in Year 1-6 to be wearing a broad brimmed sunhat when they are outdoors. This is part of our Sunsmart policy which requires all students and staff to be wearing a hat outside in Term 1 and 4. Please make sure your children have a sunhat each day and that it is named! Most students leave these at school in their cubbyhole during the week, so they have one every day.

Cow life

Those two legs are so annoying.
Sticking their noses into our cow business
I thought licking them
with my long, wet tongue would scare them off,
I guess I thought wrong,
They never leave us alone,
Revving up their two-wheel machines,
It gives me nightmares,
Then they leave us in the dark all night,
And why did they stop giving us hay?
Was it because I mooed all day?
Or because I jumped that fence,
Not my fault the fence was in my way,
What was I supposed to do,
Well at least I’m not a sheep.
By Angie Mones-Cazon - Year 7

A stretch of the imagination

I walk into the kitchen. The air is filled with the smell of fresh pancake. I sit down, my annoying sister is on the other side of the table. She looks at me with beady eyes.
Mum plopped a fresh pancake on each of our plates. I go to grab the maple syrup but the little brat snatches it before me. She pours a whole heap of syrup on her pancake. The pancake screams as it drowns in syrup.
After she has finished flooding the pancake, she puts the bottle just out of my reach. On purpose, of course. I reach for the bottle, my whole arm stretches. It is as long as a giraffe’s neck. I am like a cartoon character. I have super powers. I yell, with great pride, “ I am Elastic Woman.”
Gypsy Thornton - Year 7

Beach Rides

The most magical place
stands in the middle of a sandy beach
with a horse ready
to go for a gallop
the wind blows
making my hair fly around wildly
I taste the salt from the nearby sea
horses hooves thud on the wet sand
leaving a trail of horse prints
that close over behind us
the horse heavily breathing
through its open nostrils
I sit back in the saddle
we come to a stop
and we stand in the middle
of the sand.
Hollie Scarlet - Year 8

My bedroom

It’s a place of calm and peace
fluffy blankets,
the dark clouds
out the window.
I sneak open my ipad.
I can a hear a racket
of mice underground.
Oh no, it’s my parents coming.
Turn off the ipad.
Put it on the dresser.
Pretend to sleep under the
fluffy blanket.
Sophie Jones - Year 5

Daffodils
Brick mills
Honeybees
Oak trees

People that laugh
Yellow and black

Rice risotto

All my friends

Truth is...

I am walking to school. I get to the school gate thinking, my bag is very light today. Then I realise I’ve forgotten my school bag.
I decide to fly back home. But I forgot my wings.
I think I can super speed home but I’d forgotten to charge my batteries.
I call a private jet to pick me up and take me home which was a two minute walk away. They think I want to go to China so they fly me to China instead. Yay a day off school.
