Newsletter - WE 21/05/2021
Cross Country The weather was about as good as it could be for our annual cross country this week and we were very impressed with the level of participation. Thank you to the parents and caregivers who came along in support and thanks to Ms Helmore for all her work in putting the event together.
Parent Teacher Interviews These will be held on the 5th and 6th of July and this year you will have the option of choosing to have a face to face meeting or by a zoom video call. Look out for the booking instructions coming your way in the next week and please read these carefully to make sure you have a smooth experience on the night.
Next WeekA busy week with our Outdoor Education students heading away to the Marlbourough Sounds; a group heading to the Otago University Open days; our Year 7 and 8 debating team heading away to Ashgrove school for competition and Room 6 heading to the Air Force Museum. Our whole instructional staff team will also be taking part in a behaviour support training after school delivered through the Minstry of Education to help us to support our learners.
Family Violence Training A fairly sobering session this week with NZ Police and Womens Refuge as they helped us to understand how to recognise and respond to family violence in our community. As part of this training , they reminded us of the support groups that are available and I have added the contact numbers into this newsletter.
Rose Planting for Mrs MossmanOur ‘Penelope’ roses have arrived and are ready for planting and on Tuesday at lunchtime the students who choose to attend will have the opportunity to put them in the ground outside the Academy building and if they wish, say a few words.
UniformPlease help us by ensuring your child leaves home in the correct uniform each day. This reduces conflict between teachers and students and makes for a better day for all. For Year 9-13 the bottom half is plain black and smart. WE DO NOT ALLOW HOODIES of any kind. If your child is cold, we suggest a thermal underlayer. We do have a school jersey, jacket, scarf and hat available to purchase from the office.
Have a great weekend.
Nga mihi nui.

Senior School News
This week started with a group of students trialling for the Top of the South Island (TOSI) team to attend the New Zealand Area Schools sports tournament in Dunedin during the July School holidays. It was wonderful to see our students focussing and applying themselves to the best of their ability on the sports fields and courts to gain a position in the TOSI team.Congratulations to Grace Moriarty (Netball A), Celine Barnes (Netball A, Ki o Rahi), Hannah Ferguson (Netball B), Nathan Kay (Rugby, Basketball, Ki o Rahi), Arie Newall (Rugby, Basketball), Logan Topp (Rugby), Jonny Charlwood (Rugby), Mateo Jamieson (Rugby, Ki o Rahi), and Will Neil (Rugby) for achieving this goal. The hard work continues for these students improving their skills and fitness while staying injury free over the next eight weeks so they are in peak condition for the tournament.
This is an excellent opportunity to bring up the subject of goal setting. For these students they have met their first goal of making the team, an outcome orientated goal. Now they turn to setting goals around improving performance on the court or field to improve their chances of being selected into a South Island team to play the North Island, with the ultimate outcome goal being to make a New Zealand Area Schools team.
When setting goals, it is important to remember that we set the right type of goal for the situation. In this situation, selection into a team is not in our control, so an outcome goal such as making a New Zealand Area School team is setting ourselves up to miss what we desire the most. Instead, a performance goal that helps us improve our skills, fitness, or team play would be more relevant. By focusing on yourself and what you can do to improve your performance (Performance Goals), then outcome goals will take care of themselves as you are performing to the best of your ability.
All the best to the students for the upcoming tournament in July. For those who didn’t make the team or are yet to trial, work hard on improving your personal skills and fitness for future trials.

From our School Health Nurse - Mischa
As you are probably aware, Pink Shirt Day stemmed from two students taking a stand against their peer being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. This happened in Canada in 2007, and now in NZ it is an annual campaign used to celebrate kindness and inclusiveness whilst ensuring we provide safe workplaces, communities, schools and families for all.
I had my pink shirt on at school on Wednesday as I don't tolerate it at all and have seen first-hand the impact of this on our children especially in our communities and schools.
If any of the students at Amuri ever need to chat about being bullied or if you are worried about your peers too, then please drop into the clinic on a Wednesday and catchup. I would love to support you to ensure the cycle can be broken and the right supports given to anyone in need.
Bullying can seem very small and harmless at the start, but with repetition and a constant occurrence can lead to a lifetime of effects be that physical, emotional, verbal or psychological on the victim. Meanwhile, left unnoticed it can become habit forming for the perpetrator. It can happen in the school grounds, the sports fields, the quiet streets and online.
Be aware, check in with your children, students, peers and family and reach out if you need to.
Yours in Good HealthMischa
