2018 was a another great year for Christchurch Girls' High School/Te Kura o Hine Waiora.

The Year 9 students had a range of guest speakers and taster sessions.

In February this year, 250 brand new year 9 students were bused off to Waipara Boy’s Brigade for their camp. It was a fun-packed week of Ako classes coming and going with eager girls starting to get to know one another.

Our Year 10 camps in Term 4 were a success again this year.

This year the Year 10 group worked on a variety of projects as part of our Junior Curriculum Project.

On the 8-10 March, five Year 11 Geography classes had a field trip to get an introduction to Geography and to investigate the tourism patterns of Queenstown. The data was then used in the internal assessment at the end of Term 1.

Every year at the end of Term 3 the Year 11 Physical Education students head to Hanmer Springs to experience some ‘proper’ mountain biking.

Every year in June the Year 12 Physical Education students head to Boyle River, in the Lewis Pass, to experience some of what the outdoors has to offer.

On Friday 18th May the two Year 12 Tourism classes travelled to Akaroa for a one-day trip to see the popular tourist destination on our doorstep – Akaroa. Along the way we stopped at Little River to have a look at the Silo Motels and their environmentally friendly set up.

On Monday 25 June Atithi Chamoli, Treasa Glubb, Mary O’Leary and Heli Pate, accompanied by Jason Aaron and Sarah O’Leary, travelled down to Otago University to compete in the 2018 BrainBee Neuroscience competition.

For a week at the end of May, each Year 13 Biology class travelled to Wainui and spent a night in YMCA accommodation by the shore front.

"A Night at the Oscars" was the theme for this year's leavers' formal.

Congratulations to all the girls who participated in this competition in Term 2.

It was a fabulous event with students performing monologues and duologues from Shakespearean plays, as well as extracts written by female New Zealand authors.

The Junior Speech Competition was, as expected, a highlight in the English calendar for 2018.

Junior girls were invited to take a quote from a Shakespearean Drama and create an A4 poster.

The annual Senior Alison Harper Competition was held at school on Friday 13 April.

Congratulations to the winners of the Senior Chirnside Shakespeare Competition, 2018, which was held on 30 August.

On Thursday 9 August, eight senior students partook in the CGHS Senior Speech Competition. The competition was fierce, with eight superb and well-crafted speeches.

The Fiscal Policy Challenge tasks senior Economics students to make recommendations to the Tax Working Group on the New Zealand tax system.

The annual CGHS Film Festival was held on the 16th August in the PAC. It was a fabulous event that showcased seven short films, all made by CGHS students.

On the 27th of May 2018, students and staff members of CGHS flooded into the gym for the long-awaited opening of the Performing Arts Centre by Her Excellency, the Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy.

On Tuesday the 1st of May, the International Club held an International Food Day.

On December 2018 the school gym was packed with staff, students and many parents for our first ever Junior Prizegiving.

A group of five of our top senior economists, Charlotte Partington, Sarah Bates, Lily Trotter, Akeira Worthington and Beth Wray took part in the prestigious annual Monetary Policy Challenge run by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

On Saturday 7 April, eighteen girls represented Christchurch Girls' High School at the annual University of Otago, Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival. The festival was held in our new Performing Arts Centre.

This has been an incredibly busy year for the Charities Committee, with large fundraisers happening every term. It started off with a bang, with our newly formed committee volunteering at the annual Christchurch Children’s Day and Sanitarium WeetBix Tryathlon.

On Monday 3rd December ten students and two staff members together with their accompanying guide flew via Singapore to Yangon in Myanmar.

This year in the Garden Club we had a fantastic group of girls who showed a great amount of interest and commitment in the garden.

Senior Film Club this year has enjoyed meeting once a week to view films, discuss our favourites and warn each other about films that perhaps didn't quite make the grade!

The International Club is a space for students of all nationalities to embrace new cultures.

Every Thursday a group of keen knitters and those who wanted to learn met in the library at lunchtime. What the group most enjoyed was the creativity and the fact that you can knit and be social at the same time.

A small yet keen group of girls were involved in the Robotics club this year.

As president, I can truthfully say that Scribblers is a creative plane of liberation that enables a place of celebration and support which only exists in a space where people feel comfortable enough to spill their soul onto paper.

The Senior Book Club is a tight-knit group of the senior school’s most voracious bookworms.

The New Zealand Sign Language class ran weekly on a Monday afternoon and saw a small group of girls, made up by all year levels, excel in learning New Zealand's third official language.

This year Christchurch Girls’ High School has three main chamber groups.

On Monday the 17th of September, the combined CGHS/CBHS Orchestra and the String Orchestra took part in the annual Orchestra Festival, held at Christchurch Boys’ High School

The Christchurch Girls’ and Christchurch Boys’ High School Concert Band had a great year. We had seven Girls’ High students involved this year, and as usual had a lot of fun! We played contemporary music like ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and ‘Hallelujah’ as well as film-style music like ‘Summon the Heroes’ and a Pirates of the Caribbean Medley.

United Nations Youth conferences are run for youth by youth; these are held at regional, national and international levels. Those who attend these events gain many important skills, such as public speaking, negotiation and become able to critically examine the world through different perspectives.

On Monday the 17th of September, the combined CGHS/CBHS Orchestra and the String Orchestra took part in the annual Orchestra Festival, held at Christchurch Boys’ High School.

This year the Christchurch Girls’ and Boys’ High School combined Orchestra has been working incredibly hard towards all the events and has performed extremely well throughout the year with all students performing with great enthusiasm and musicianship.

This year has been another busy year for the Christchurch Girls’ and Boys’ High School Combined String Orchestra.

The kapa haka in 2018 consisted of about 30 members and was led by Samantha Moore and Aliyah Teirney – Lambert, with great support from Olivia McIntyre as the Kaea of most of our songs.

On Friday 25 June, Ella Tanoa–Kell and Jayanna Tia were acknowledged for their leadership of our Pasifika students at a breakfast event held at Shirley Boys’ High School.

Temukisa Fetuao and Ema Pasikala represented Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora at the Pasifika speech competitions on Tuesday 22 May.

On Saturday 17th of March 2018, the Christchurch Girls' High/Te Kura o Hine Waiora Polyfest group set off to perform at the Canterbury Polyfest Festival.

The CGHS Athletics Sports were held on Friday 20 February on the Burnside High School lower field.

This year Christchurch Girls’ High School had a total of 17 badminton groups, which was a lot more than in previous years.

The Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura O Hine Waiora Equestrian Team had a fantastic year and came away with some great results as well as the satisfaction of representing the school with pride.

The football team endured a season of “what ifs” on their way to finishing tied for 5th in the Wednesday Premier competition and runners up at the Gary Sowden tournament played in Blenheim.

The hockey season has zoomed by with six teams competing in an exhilarating season.

The fast-paced game of futsal was well represented at Christchurch Girls’ High this year, with two fabulous junior teams entered into the Term 1 and Term 4 competitions.

At the end of Term 2, our Ki-o-rahi teams participated in the first ever ‘girls’ division at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Ki-o-rahi tournament.

This year there was again a keen group of girls across every year group who took part in the Royal Life Saving awards programme.

CGHS students enjoyed success at the South Island XCO Mountain Biking Cross Country Championships on 4 February at Halswell Quarry.

Once again the CGHS Netball Club has had an awesome season this year with a total of 22 teams competing in the Wednesday and Saturday competitions. It has been great to see so many girls of all ages getting involved, showing such great sportsmanship and doing CGHS proud.

At the start of the ski season, both the ski and snowboard teams entered the Canterbury school sport competition, held at Mt Hutt ski field.

Rugby at Christchurch Girls' High School is a growing sport and this year the 1st XV had a number of successes.

In this invigorating and sociable sport, personal records have been broken by the Christchurch Girls’ High School Rock Climbing Group.

Esme Maillard (13DTP) competed at the Elite Track National Cycling Championships in Invercargill between 21-25 February. Esme achieved a Personal Best in the individual pursuit Time Trial, taking 15 seconds off her previous time, placing her 8th in New Zealand for the U19 females.

We have had another successful year of tennis at school attracting a lot of new players across the junior years as well as combining our best players to form Senior A and Senior B teams.

What another fantastic year it’s been for our multisport team! Our strong team of triathletes and duathletes certainly made an appearance on the competitive scene this year and reaped the rewards of some outstanding results.

Volleyball has been a popular sport this year with a combination of competitive and social teams playing in Term 1 and Term 4 in the Monday night schools’ competition.

2018 has been a successful year for the CGHS Water Polo Team. With the same young team that carried on from last year, we took on the goal of improving our placing of 8th in 2017.
