Important dates for the 2019 school year.

On Monday 10th December we held our annual Orientation Day to provide the Year 8s who are enrolled with us the opportunity to become more familiar with the College.

On Thursday 6th December we celebrated our students academic, sporting and cultural achievements at our 2018 Prizegiving.

Day one of the Junior Activity Week saw the year 9 students head off to Nga Manu Nature Reserve in Waikanae and then Raumati Beach for lunch and a swim. The year 10 students had a cooking competition at school in the morning and sports in the afternoon.

This year's College Prizegiving was different in several ways from previous years. Firstly it was a combined Junior and Senior one, and secondly, it was held in the evening.

Established in 2004 and awarded annually, the Horowhenua Youth Excellence Scholarships are designed to reward young people's efforts in community service or excellence in sport, academia or art and culture.

On Monday 26th November the College Hall was packed with students from nine different schools for the Nanogirl Science show.

Pachience Fenn studied the U-Skills Academy Level 3 Hospitality course at UCOL this year.

The gateway work placement programme continued successfully this year with popular job choices being hospitality and early childhood education for girls and farming and retail for boys.

Kyle’s dedication and unrelenting focus on some of our most vulnerable community members exemplifies the spirit of service we have to our own communities.

The triathalon took place in Napier on Saturday 3rd Novembeber.

On Thursday 8th November our year 13s joined the staff for the traditional strawberries and icecream morning tea in the Staffroom.

Local artist Birgit Moffat facilitated the community art project, which aimed to use the ancient craft of felt to build bridges between the generations.

On Thursday 25th October Manawatu College entered two teams in the secondary schools Ki o Rahi Competition held at Tu Toa in Palmerston North.

Although he is of Kahungunu descent from Mohaka near Wairoa, Gilbert was raised in this District and went through Horowhenua College. He was a class-mate of Steve Parrant, and they remained as friends ever since.

Conrad completed a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) at Otago University and a Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) at the University of Canterbury. He then completed a PG Diploma in Education and is currently working towards a Master of Education with Canterbury.

Year 10 students Shelby Wells, Miniah Summerell and year 13 student Shae Gray have been named as finalists for the Manawatu Secondary Schools Sports Awards in their respective sports, weightlifting and rugby league.

This year the ball was held on Friday 12th October. It was a carnival themed evening with games, prizes, photos, popcorn, candyfloss, food and dancing.

On Tuesday 25th September, 25 of our staff and students set off for Narita, Japan.

The Junior Boys basketball team was made up of eleven year 9 and 10 boys and was coached by senior students Micheal Tamarapa and Ed Winiana this year.

All three girls qualified for Nationals by hitting D grade weights in competition for their respective weight divisions.

Congratulations to Connor who was voted as the Student Representative for the Board of Trustees for a second 12 month term.

On Wednesday 12th September our Nga Toi, Whakairo and Te Reo classes travelled to Horowhenua College to take part in the Te Wiki o te Reo Maori Annual Tri-Series.

She will have oversight of years nine and ten, and will teach a year nine homeroom. Kathrine will take up her new position at the beginning of term four.

After months of planning, organising and fundraising, our senior Health and P.E students set off for their trip to Rotorua on Wednesday 12th of September.

Congratulations to the following former pupils who have graduated from Victoria University between June 2017 and May 2018.

Nominations closed at noon on Friday 7th September for the vacant parents’ representative position, and there was only one nomination, that of Tom Zimmerman, father of current students Massie(16) and Mikaere Harvey (14) and father of Maddi (9) and Thomas(3), and husband of Jodi.

The event was held in Whanganui on Thursday 6th September.

Being a rugby team the boys found the rules and strategy a little challenging but they picked up as the week went on.

This year the annual tournament was hosted by Netball Manawatu and held in Palmerston North.

The 2018 Secondary Schools Weightlifting Championships were held at Functional Strength Weightlifting Club in Auckland

Year 9 Homeroom 9LS visit the New Zealand Heritage display at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom as part of their Kiwi Identity study.

With the changes to the College uniform becoming operational, the wearing of regulation uniform will be a focus for all staff.

Two occasions over the last two weeks have illustrated how important a supportive wider community is to the success of events a school hosts.

The competition kicked off on Friday 24th August with each House facing off in games of soccer, netball, basketball and hockey.

The 12.5km Hall Block Humdinger started at 11:00am at the Ferry Reserve, off SH3 on the Woodville side of the Manawatu Gorge.

Shae Gray, Toroa Rapana, Massie Harvey and Josh Rauhihi who were part of the Horowhenua-Kapiti team who won the Hurricanes Under 20 Series for 2018!

Congratulations to the following year 10 students who have made the HKRFU U14 Representative wider squad for 2018.

Now in its fifth year, the competition is a rare opportunity for New Zealand’s next generation of concept designers to get their work noticed.

Rock band Fusion, consisting of year 13 student Justin Jurgens and younger brother Brad, year 11, won the 'Fatboy Style Award' at the Smokefree Rockquest regional finals at the Globe Theater in Palmerston North earlier this year.

That puts Shae in the top 30 secondary schools players in the country (and one of the best 4 centres).

Navah played the Earthworm in the stage adaption of Rohl Dahl's novel in a total of 6 shows at the Levin Little Theatre.

Our annual Open Evening was held this year on Wednesday 1st August.

The camp was held at Napier Boys High School and ran from Monday 9th July through to Monday 16th July.

On Saturday 14th July, Emma completed a 3km swim, 120km bike and a 30km run in just 8:37.17.

On Friday 6th July, a touring team of under 14 boys from the Canberra Vikings in Australia came to visit the college during their tour of New Zealand.

On the last day of term two the team participating in the annual Iron Maori held a hangi fundraiser.

On Friday 6th July, Domino Youth Casting Team auditioned students aged 14 - 18 for starring roles in a New Zealand feature film being shot in Wellington this year.

Paolo Mura, Guilluame Lesne, Emma Arnold, Seraina Gamma and Ilenia Armiento were presented with parting gifts from staff and students as well as a school haka.

On Monday 2nd July, Birgit Moffatt, a felt artist from Otaki came in to run a workshop with some of our Art students for a community installation art piece.

The camp will run from Monday 9th July through to Monday 16th July at Napier Boys High School and for the first time, all players attending the camp will play against the Blues U18 camp teams on Sunday 15th July.

On Friday 29th June, a group of 20 students attended the event at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom, sponsored by Paranui Marae.

The students are building a small cabin from scratch, as part of an NCEA assessment.

On Thursday 28th June the annual competition took place in the Gym.

It was a very successful competition for both girls. Every time they step up on the stage they deliver something big.

Year 9 Homeroom 9FH set off for Wellington on Wednesday 27th June for their annual, three day Amazing Race Mathematics trip.

On Thursday 21st June the senior Food and Catering class began their new NCEA unit, hot sandwich preparation.

Seniors at Manawatu College are ready to take advantage of the driver licence programme launched by HLC and Manawatu, Horowhenua & Waiopehu colleges.

Gateway is a great way to develop work-readiness and gain an understanding of the different jobs available in the community.

On Friday 8th June rock band Fusion, consisting of year 13 student Justin Jurgens and younger brother Brad, competed in the Smokefree Rockquest regional finals at the Globe Theater in Palmerston North.

On Wednesday 6th June the Senior Health and P.E class headed down to Wellington to complete the Adrenalin Forest high ropes course. The purpose of the high ropes course was to test how well the students could demonstrate interpersonal skills.

On Wednesday 30th June a group of 72 students and 8 staff members journeyed up SH3, took a left at Hawera along SH45 to join Opunake High School in the annual sporting and cultural exchange.

On Sunday 27th May three students completed the half marathon. It was year 10 student's Aymee and Charlotte Blight's first attempt at a half marathon.

One of the many positives of being a teacher is to hear of the successes of former students and reflect upon the small contribution that we or our schools may have made to these successes.

On Friday 25th May the Level 1 Physical Education class spent the day at Adrenalin Forest as part of an NCEA assessment.

Our visitors from Narita, Japan will be arriving for their annual exchange on Friday 17th August this year.

Once a year the International Pacific University in Palmerston North transforms its own campus into a Japanese Omatsuri festival venue.

On Thursday 24th May the annual road to Rockquest concert was held in the Hall as a fundraiser for Justin and Brad Jurgens' band, Fusion who compete in the regional Rockquest competition on 8th June .

At the 41 Degree Weightlifting Competition in Wellington on 20th March, Shelby Wells hit a personal best clean and jerk (65kg) and total (107kg).

On Tuesday 15th May a number of our junior students worked with local award winning artist and illustrator, Wendy Hodder to paint a mural on the fence at Te Waiora Medical Center.

On a wet Wednesday afternoon, Manawatu College hosted the annual Manawatu Inter-Secondary Schools Cross Country competition on our Cross Country Track.

Week three of term two was Anti-Bullying Week. Monday 14th May to Friday 18th May is an annual nationwide Bullying Prevention Week to raise awareness of how to prevent and respond to bullying and provide an opportunity for schools to highlight their everyday work to counter bullying.

Wellington’s annual, long running regional motocross championships for all classes – Senior, Junior and Mini, raced over the one day on Sunday 13th May 2018.

On Wednesday 9 May the level 2/3 Food and Catering class learned how to make bread and buns with guest visitor Lenore Winterburn, a cookery tutor from the Horowhenua Learning Center.

On Wednesday 9th May the annual Cross Country run took place over the ITM forest.

Attitude are a group of young people who travel New Zealand speaking in schools to creatively teach life skills that will assist teenagers to make life-enhancing choices.

In preparation for the annual P.E Hard as Nails Challenge, twenty of our senior students attended a five week training course at the CrossFit MANA gym.

On Wednesday 25th April our Senior Student Leaders participated in the ANZAC Day formalities in Foxton.

In the term one holidays year 13 student Quinten Mochan completed a senior course for cadets in Ohakea.

The competition was also significant as it was Samantha Hansen's first coaching experience in competition.

The two day event took place on 21st - 22nd of April during the term one holidays.

The tournament was held in Wellington on 16th and 17th April.

The event features a 42km marathon, 21km half marathon and 10km and 5km fun runs.

The Summer Sports Competition sees each House face off against each other with the junior students playing non stop cricket and the senior students playing softball.

On Friday 13 April the year 9 Food Technology class made lunch for the Foxton emergency services to say thank you for the work that they do in our community.

On Thursday 12th April the Center of Sporting Excellence held a black tie awards ceremony to celebrate their achievements in term one.

On Tuesday 10th April the Senior Leaders and House Leaders were presented with their badges by sports medicine specialist, Dr Ra Durie.

Youth Voice is a group made up of 13-24 year olds that have been selected to represent the youth of Horowhenua, from holding events for young people in the region, to having a say on issues that affect youth in the Horowhenua District.

Congratulations to Shelby who finished 28th out of 172 in Australasia for girls aged 14 to 15.

The guests were welcomed into the College with a powhiri in the morning and then played our Senior A netball team at lunchtime.

The competition was held at the Freyberg pools in Palmerston North on Saturday 7th April.

The GRIP Student Leadership Conference is unique in that it concentrates specifically on training student leaders for their role as school leaders.

These students have been nominated by their classroom teachers for academic excellence in term one.

These seminars are run by the Center for Science and Citizenship and the activities encourage students to really think about some issues.

Both girls competed outstandingly, with over 130 riders split into three heights.

On Wednesday 28th March the HKRFU Super 6 Rugby competition kicked off.

When students perform consistently above the 'Achieved' level, their result(s) can be 'endorsed' to reflect that high achievement. This can occur at either the Certificate or individual course level.

On Sunday 18th March, Manawatu College entered a Junior and a Senior team into the Condor Sevens Qualifying Tournament held in Palmerston North.

On Saturday 17th March, eleven of our students represented the College at the Manawatu Inter-Secondary Schools Athletics Championships at Massey University.

On Wednesday 14th March three teams entered the Howowhenua Kapiti Secondary Schools 7's Competition in Levin.

This year we had an official team of three staff and 14 students who participated in the Manawatu Region's Relay For Life.

Six of our students, Shae Gray, Elian Mohi, Toroa Rapana, Isaac Laracy, Michael Tamarapa and Harry Mehana represented the Horowhenua Kapiti Maori Under 18 team in the Te Tini - a - Maui Maori Rugby Tournament 2018 held in Levin.

The team played in the E Tu Whanau National Touch Championships held in Auckland on March 3rd.

Our annual Inter-House Athletics day took place on Wednesday 28th February on the College field.

There were a huge number of competitors, 36 teams were entered and there were over 120 pony/horses competing with over 30 horses in each class.

On Thursday lunchtimes the Music Department hold Peace and Positivity Performances where the students showcase their musical talents.

On Sunday 18th February Shelby and Miniah travelled down to Wellington with their coach Mr Nation to compete in the Club Competition.

On Wednesday 14th February our Year 12 students attended the award winning one day RYDA road safety education programme held at Donnelly Park in Levin.

Held in Auckland this year, this competition sees the best young Touch players in New Zealand face off in six grades: Under 16 Boys, Girls and Mixed and Under 18 Boys, Girls and Mixed.

Shae represented the New Zealand Maori Rugby League Team in an international tournament in January 2018.

Thankfully the recent heatwave subsided for our annual Tabloid Sports competition!

On Wednesday 31 January we held a full school Powhiri to welcome all staff and students new to the College.

Making the transition into College life can be daunting  and so one of the first events on the calendar is the year 9 Overnight Orientation at the Foxton Beach Bible Camp.

The Leadership Camp was run on Monday to Wednesday of the first week of school. It was moved to the beginning of the year to assist the new leaders in being prepared for the year and more importantly be ready for the Year 9 camp.

On Saturday 27 January the 57th Annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix was held at the famous Woodville circuit.

Locky came 12th and Zac 16th overall in this event. 

This programme targets outstanding all round science, maths and technology students in Year 12 who are returning to school in Year 13 and are planning to study the sciences or technology at tertiary level.
